Limestone Walks-Off in 12th Inning to Split Doubleheader

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Senior Trace Whetsell (Gilbert, S.C.) hit a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th, allowing the Limestone College baseball team to salvage the final game of a four-game series with Goldey-Beacom College on Sunday, February 16 at Founders FCU Stadium.

The Lightning won the first game of the day, 11-1, before the Saints rallied twice in the nightcap for a 4-3 walk-off victory to collect their first home win of the 2020 season.

GAME 1 INFORMATION
Score: Goldey-Beacom 11, Limestone 1
Records: Goldey-Beacom (3-0), Limestone (1-9)
Location: Founders FCU Stadium

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Sophomore Benjamin Huber (Pendleton, S.C.) doubled twice and finished with a walk
  • Senior Matt Hilderbrandt (Bowmanville, Ontario) added a base knock
  • Senior Tyler O'Dell (North Hanover, N.J.) finished with a hit and a stolen base
  • Senior Josh Evans (Indian Land, S.C.) tallied a single
  • Junior Kyle Strovink (Rocky Point, N.Y.) drove in the team's only run with a sacrifice fly
  • Graduate starter Eric Mullinax (Greenville, S.C.) struck out eight, but gave up seven runs
  • He allowed eight hits and two walks in three innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the season
  • Freshman reliever Trent Dailey (Bluffton, S.C.) struck out three over 1.2 scoreless innings
  • Limestone recorded just five hits in game three of the series

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mullinax struck out the first batter of the game, but that proved to be the go-ahead run as the batter reached on a wide pitch to start the day. Despite striking out four times in the first, the Lighting sent nine men to the dish in the frame and would push across five runs on just three hits to take an early 5-0 lead.

The graduate starter accomplished a rare feat with seven strikeouts over two innings, striking out the side in the second, but would give up a single run as Goldey-Beacom moved ahead, 6-0. The Saints got on the board in the home half as a leadoff double by Huber cut the margin to 6-1 on a sac fly by Strovink.

The visitors put the game out of reach with a single tally in the third before adding three more runs on a pair of base knocks, a walk and back-to-back hit batters in the fifth, making it a 10-1 game. Limestone was limited to only five hits in the game, while the Lightning tacked on one more run to take the series.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Whetsell went 2-for-6 in the night cap, including the game-winning two-run single in the 12th
  • Hilderbrandt finished with a double and an RBI
  • O'Dell added two base hits, a walk and a run scored
  • Sophomore Ryan Farkas (Huntersville, N.C.) chipped in a double for the Saints
  • Freshman Conner Sibbald (Charleston, S.C.) doubled in his first career at-bat
  • Huber finished with an RBI, and then got the win on the mound with an inning of relief
  • Freshman starter JJ Shelton (Summerville, S.C.) went six strong innings, collecting three strikeouts – he allowed two runs – one earned – on five hits and three walks
  • Senior Michael Sholtis (Greer, S.C.) struck out four over five scoreless innings

HOW IT HAPPENED

For the third time in the series, the Lightning scratched together runs in the first as a two-out RBI double and an error gave the visitors a quick 2-0 edge. Sibbald then blooped a one-out double into right in the third – his first career hit – but as had been the theme for the Saints this weekend, he was left stranded.

In the fifth, O'Dell worked a one-out walk for the Saints before Farkas yanked a double into leftfield. However, the Blue and Gold was unable to take advantage of the situation as the next two batters were retired – making Limestone 2-of-28 with runners in scoring position up to that point over the weekend.

The Saints finally got something working in the bottom half of the sixth following a single back up the middle by Whetsell. He would score a few batters later on a fielder's choice by Huber before Hilderbrandt chased home the tying run from first with a frozen rope over the rightfielder's head for an RBI double.

Sholtis took over on the mound for the Blue and Gold in the seventh and retired 15 of the 18 hitters that he faced over the next five innings, including sitting down 11 straight batters at one point. Goldey-Beacom broke up the deadlock in the top of the 12th, however, scoring an unearned run to move in front, 3-2.

With a runner on and two outs in the home half, sophomore Bryce Stavitski (Gaffney, S.C.) was hit by a pitch before Evans worked a walk to load the bases. With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Whetsell broke the weekend slump for the Saints by ripping the game-winning single through the left side.

UP NEXT

Weather pending, Limestone is scheduled to play two midweek nonconference games before opening league play next weekend. The Saints will welcome Mars Hill University to Founders FCU Stadium on Tuesday, February 18 at 5 p.m.
