ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - Sophomore
Nick Davidson (Lumberton, N.J.) netted a last second bucket just before the buzzer to drive the Bears past Dominican College, 78-76 Tuesday evening at the Hennessy Center in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division play.
Bloomfield won their fifth straight game and improved to 9-10 on the season with an 8-4 mark in league play as they sit atop the North Division standings. The Chargers dropped to 6-13 overall and 5-5 in conference action.
Davidson poured in a team-high 21 points, going 6-for-11 from the field and 8-for-10 from the line. Classmate
Ignacio Diez (Madrid, Spain) notched his second double-double of the season with 13 points (3-6 FG, 1-2 3-FG, 6-6 FT) and 12 boards.
Claude Blue (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Rakwan Kelly (Newark, N.J.) each registered 10 points for the Bears. Blue added six boards, three assists, three blocks and a steal while Kelly grabbed seven rebounds to go along with two steals and an assist. Freshman,
Safee Abdus-Sabur (Newark, N.J.) chipped in nine points off the bench and snagged five boards.
Â
Sean O'Reilly led Dominican with a game-high 23 points, while Kristopher Hargraves added 14.
Â
Diez opened the game with the Bears first six points as the teams traded buckets across a seven-minute span until Bloomfield took a 12-11 lead. The visitors scored their next ten points from the line and bolstered their largest advantage of the half after an
Ahmid Williams (Monroe, N.J.) 3-pointer put them up 10 (25-15) with 8:28 remaining in the opening half. The Chargers whittled their deficit down to two, 28-26, powered by eight consecutive points from O'Reilly. Hargraves sank two free throws to close out scoring for the half and put the home team up 39-37 as the squads headed into the break.
Â
Blue quickly erased the Chargers advantage with back-to-back buckets to start the second half but Dominican answered with a 3-pointer to reclaim the lead. Davidson put the Bears on top, 47-46, at the 16:11 minute mark but two technical free throws gave the home team the advantage right back. Â Â
Â
The margin would hover between six and one over the next seven-plus minutes with neither team able to pull away from the other. Down by five with 4:36 on the clock, Bloomfield went on a 6-0 run fueled by consecutive buckets from sophomore,
Juan Brown (Annapolis, M.D.) and posted a 70-69 edge. But Dominican would not go away as free throws from each team knotted the score at 72-72 with just over two minutes to go.
The Chargers seized control when Hargraves buried a layup down low but Diez respond with a trip to the line and netted two free throws to even the score at 74 all. After a Dominican time out with forty seconds on the clock the home team forced a Bloomfield foul and went ahead by two on the made opportunities from the line. Diez returned the favor on the Bears side of the ball as he drew a foul and sank two free throws to even the match at 76-76 with 15 seconds to go. With five tics on the clock, Hargraves turned the ball over out of bounds setting up the last second heroics for Bloomfield. Coming out of a Bears timeout, Brown drove the ball to the basket for the win and Davidson found himself in position for the put back before time expired. Â
Â
Dominican outshot Bloomfield, 44.8 percent (26-58) to 42.1 percent (24-57), and drained 42.1 percent (8-19) to 30.0 percent (3-10) from beyond the arc. The Bears made up the difference as they shot better at the line, 75 percent (27-36) to 66.7 percent (16-24) and won the glass (42-34), but the teams were deadlocked in the paint, 30-30 and in turnovers, 11-11.
Â
