BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College Bears women's basketball team suffered a 75-63 setback against the visiting Skyhawks from Stonehill College Saturday afternoon in non-conference regional action. Senior center,
Tierra Scott (Bear, Del.) had a career-high offensive day leading all scorers with 21 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Freshman guard,
De'Andra Humphries (Boston, Mass.) came in off the bench to add 15 points for the Bears who fell to 8-7 on the season. On the Skyhawks side of the ball, senior Amy Pelletier (Beverly, Mass.) netted a team-high 20 points including 9-for-10 from the free throw line as Stonehill improved to 13-1 on the year.
Bloomfield played the nationally ranked Skyhawks to a 29-29 tie in the first half with Scott netting 15 of her total points in the opening frame. The Bears forced twelve turnovers from Stonehill in the opening stanza and held a 20-16 edge in rebounds heading into the break. Bloomfield shot just 28.6 percent from the field to start the game but made up the difference converting 12-of-19 (63.2%) free throws in the frame. The visitors were on target, knocking down 11-of-22 shots from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. The Bears found themselves up four (29-25) with thirty-nine seconds on the clock after Scott laid in a bucket on a fast break but Stonehill closed the deficit with four consecutive made free throws to set the stage for a thrilling second half.
Sophomore guard,
Tianna Smith (Nanuet, N.Y.) gave the home team a slight lead (35-31) on a layup in the paint as the non-conference foes jockeyed for position coming out of the locker room. The Skyhawks enjoyed their own four-point advantage (43-39) with 11:50 remaining after converting the front-end of a 1-and-1. Humphries buried a three-pointer that put the Bears back up 44-43, but that was the last lead Bloomfield enjoyed as Stonehill seized control on the ensuing possession after a conventional three-point play from Kelly Martin (Scituate, Mass.) that bookended a couple of Pelletier technical free throws. The Skyhawks went to the charity stripe thirty-one times in the second frame and converted twenty-six of them to secure the victory down the stretch. Bloomfield was perfect from the line in the second half, but only made five trips in the stanza.
Smith finished the contest with 9 points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field while Scott secured her third double-double of the season. Martin concluded the game with 14 points, going 6-of-8 from the line for Stonehill and forward Tori Faieta (Lynn, Mass.) notched her seventh double-double of the year with 12 points and 13 boards. Humphries' contribution helped give Bloomfield a 25-17 edge in bench production and they also saw advantages in 2nd chance points (21-18) and points in the paint (32-28). Stonehill edged out the Bears in points off turnovers (20-16) while committing five more miscues (19-14) than Bloomfield.
The Bears next challenge will be Wednesday, January 21st when they travel to face Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division rival, Nyack College. The remainder of Bloomfield's schedule features only conference opponents as they gear up to defend their CACC Championship from a year ago.
