Griffins Protect Victory with Second Straight Shutout

Box Score Lafayette Hill, Pa. – (9/20/2012) – Controlling play at Victory Field #1, the Chestnut Hill College men' soccer team recorded a their second straight shutout this afternoon with a 2-0 triumph over Shepherd University. A hustle play on the part of sophomore forward Channing Couillard (Jacksonville, Fla.) produced a 1-0 Griffin lead at 35:41 and a second-half insurance goal from sophomore forward Patrick Steger (La Plata, Md.) put the finishing touches on the Rams defeat.
 
Despite a balance in shots, 13-11 Griffins, corners, 3-2 Griffins, and fouls, 16-16, Chestnut Hill College (3-3-1) possessed the ball for a majority of the affair. Constantly on defense, Shepherd University (3-3-1) eventually gave way in the 36th minute, when Couillard chased down and headed a bouncing ball into the Ram goal for his first collegiate tally, 1-0. Following halftime, the Griffins kept the pressure on. Their effort was rewarded in the 83rd minute (82:44), when a long pass from junior defenseman Ross Garabedian (Horsham, Pa.) found Steger for a chip shot over the Ram goalkeeper, 2-0. The Griffin defense and sophomore goalkeeper David Sullivan (Kutztown, Pa.) did the rest, holding the Rams scoreless until the final horn.
 
Three Rams recorded two shots, while freshman goalkeeper Alex Aleshire (Hagerstown, Md.) recorded one save in the loss (3-3-1).
 
Steger's four shots led the Griffins offensively. Sullivan earned his second straight win (3-3-1), and shutout, with two saves in the contest.
 
The men's soccer team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate College (CACC) schedule this weekend, when they travel to Caldwell College on Saturday, September 22, for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
