BEARS DEFEND HOME COURT TO STOP TWO-GAME SLIDE IN 82-52 WIN OVER WILMINGTON

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College women's basketball team opened up the new year forcing thirty-three turnovers at home and took an 82-52 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Wilmington University on Saturday afternoon at the Bears Gym. The win halted a two-game skid for Bloomfield and improved their record to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in conference action. The Wildcats fell to 3-10 on the year with a 1-5 CACC record after the setback.

Bloomfield surrendered the first two points of the contest on a Wilmington jumper but responded with a 16-2 spurt to assume control of the opening period after a bucket by sophomore guard, Morgan Taylor (Paterson, N.J.) The Bears watched their lead balloon to eighteen (36-18) when guard Tianna Smith (Nanuet, N.Y.) knocked in a layup in the paint with 2:23 left in the half. Smith led Bloomfield into the lockeroom up 38-24, netting 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field including two bombs from long range.

The Wildcats committed nineteen turnovers in the first half under the Bloomfied pressure and were out-rebounded by five (23-18) in the opening stanza. Senior center, Tierra Scott (Bear, D.E.) snagged seven rebounds before the break to go along with eight points. Junior, Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) dished out three assists for the Bears to compliment six points in the half.

The second period proved to be just as dubious as the first for the visiting Wildcats as freshman guard, De'Andra Humphries (Boston, M.A.) sank 1-out of-2 free throws to finished off a 14-2 run and Bloomfield found themselves up 52-26. A Humphries three-pointer at the 3:42 minute mark gave the Bears their largest advantage of the contest at thirty-two (78-46) before the home team settled for the thirty point margin of victory to end the game.

Scott finished the contest recording her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Wilson poured in nine points in the 2nd half to end with 15 points and 4 assists. Smith led all scorers netting 17 points on the afternoon and corralling 4 steals. Humphries led the Bloomfield reserves with eight points on the afternoon and three steals.

On the Wilmington side of the ball, Jasmine Lee (Chestertown, Md.) scored a team-high 10 points off the bench while senior, Jennifer Carr secured 6 rebounds and four points in a starting role.

Next up for the Bears, they travel to Rutherford, N.J. to take on CACC North Division rival, Felician College on Wednesday, January 7th at 6:00pm.
