Chargers Win Third Straight with 67-62 Triumph at Bloomfield

BOX SCORE BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – A game-high 21 points from Jeffery Adkins (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) guided the University of New Haven men's basketball team to a 67-62 victory at Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon. Justin Exum (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) added 14 points in the Chargers' third consecutive win.

The Chargers now stand at 4-2 after the non-conference, East Region triumph. Bloomfield, which is the defending Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Champion, falls to 2-5.

Adkins shot 7-for-13 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line en route to his 21 points. The senior filled out the statsheet with eight rebounds and five assists. Exum knocked down a pair of three-pointers as a part of his 14 points, and Ashanti DePass (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) sank three from distance on his way to 13 points. Down low, Cyrus James (Manchester, Conn./Howell Cheney Tech) added seven points and 10 rebounds, and Eric Anderson (Newark, N.J./Newark Tech) posted seven points and six boards in 18 minutes of work.

Off the bench, Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep / Putnam Science Academy) had four points and Joshua Guddemi (Nottingham, England/Derby) knocked down a late free throw as the Chargers secured their win from the charity stripe.

Collectively, New Haven shot 22-for-61 (36.1 percent) from the field, 6-for-22 (27.3 percent) from three-point range and 17-for-26 (65.4 percent) from the line. The Chargers were outrebounded, 51-47, and each club committed just six turnovers.

The Chargers raced out to a 20-5 lead over the opening six minutes of play, as Anderson and Exum each scored five points during the first stretch of action. Another run put New Haven on top, 34-12, with 5:34 to go in the opening period, but the Deacons responded on their home court with a 14-7 spurt to end the half. At the horn, the Chargers headed to the locker room with a 41-26 lead.

Bloomfield heated up in the second half, and slowly trimmed the deficit to one possession at 57-54 with 3:25 to go, but a pair of Exum free throws and a James putback extended the Chargers' lead to 61-54. The margin would never creep back to within one possession, as Adkins, DePass and Guddemi all sank free throws in the final two minutes to seal the 67-62 triumph.

Marvin Williams led Bloomfield with 14 points, and Claude Blue pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds for the home team.

New Haven returns to Charger Gymnasium and resumes the Northeast-10 slate on Saturday, Dec. 7 with a visit from Adelphi. The 1:30 p.m. contest between NE-10 Southwest Division foes will be broadcast live in high definition and free of charge on NewHavenChargers.com.
