Nyack Scores Early to Spoil Bentley’s Season-Opener, 5-1

CLERMONT, Fla. – Junior first baseman Morgan Hans (Washington Township, N.J.) had three hits, including a two-run single in the first inning, to lead Nyack College to a 5-1 win over Bentley University in non-conference softball action Saturday night at Legends Way 3 Field.

Bentley, which was opening its season against a team that was playing its sixth game of the season, outhit the Warriors 7-6 but stranded six runners and gave up three unearned runs.

After her teammates started the top of the first with a walk, a single and a walk, Hans made it a 2-0 game with a single through the left side. It stayed that way until the 2-4 Warriors added an unearned run in the fourth and two more in the sixth as the result of an error.

Bentley's only run of the night was scored in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore first baseman Gabby Casalino (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West HS) singled with two outs and was replaced by classmate Sami Palazzolo (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley School), who stole both second and third. She scored on a single by freshman catcher Lindsey Allen (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Technical HS) to spoil the shutout bid of junior Brittany Blair (Yonkers, N.Y.).

Blair, in her complete game effort, walked two and struck out two.

Casalino and sophomore shortstop Julie Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) both had two hits for Bentley.

Bentley will be in action twice on Sunday, taking on both the University of Findlay and Hillsdale College.
