BEARS REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN CACC BATTLE OVER COUGARS

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College women's basketball team remained undefeated in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action after a 74-65 victory over the visiting Cougars of Caldwell University. Senior Ariel Wilson tied a career-high as she lead all scorers with 23 points on the afternoon and junior Tianna Smith added 20 points to help the Bears to 6-0 in league play and 10-4 overall. The loss dropped the Cougars to 4-2 in CACC matches and 8-6 overall on the season.

The Bears snapped a two-game skid as Wilson knocked down 8 shots on 13 attempts and went 5-for-5 at the line while adding six steals to go along with four rebounds and an assist. Smith went 7-for-15 from the floor including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. She chipped in six boards, five assists and a steal for the Bears in 39 minutes of action. Seniors Iman Williams (Shreveport, L.A.) and Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) registered 12 and 10 points respectively. Williams added 8 rebounds while Golden just missed a double-double with her game-high 9 boards. Maggie Sabine paced the Purple Knights with 16 points.

Bloomfield watched the Cougars open up a 9-2 advantage to start the first quarter before answering with nine consecutive points to take an 11-9 lead at the 5:13 minute mark. Caldwell pressed ahead for another seven-point advantage (23-16) before a Wilson jumper ended the scoring at 23-18 for the opening period.

A basket from behind the arc from Wilson quickly erased the home team's deficit to begin the second quarter bringing the CACC North Division rivals even at 23. The Cougars pulled ahead slightly on a three-pointer of their own from Antoinette Pilla (30-27) before Smith sparked a 15-2 counter-run that saw the guard net nine points across a four minute stretch. The Bears closed out the half up 42-34 after shooting 56.7 percent (17-30) from the field.

After two free throws from Bloomfield's Morgan Taylor (Paterson, N.J.) opened the third quarter and gave the Bears a 44-34 lead, Caldwell responded with back-to-back three-balls from Pilla to pull within four. The North Division's lone unbeaten team withstood the Cougars charge and traded buckets for the rest of the third period to secure a 55-50 advantage heading into the final frame.

Bloomfield remained in control during the fourth quarter as a Golden layup in the paint gave the home squad a seemingly comfortable 8-point lead with 5:03 remaining however Caldwell clawed back to within three (61-64) less than three minutes later. Down by seven (68-61) with less than a minute on the clock, the Cougars were forced to foul and Bloomfield was up to the task as Wilson went 4-for-4 down the stretch from the line to seal the victory.

Pilla ended the afternoon with 17 points (6-12 FG, 5-7 3FG) for Caldwell while Kristen Drogsler recorded a team-high 20 points (9-22 FG, 2-2 FT) in the setback. Taylor finished the game with four points, four assists, four rebounds and a steal for the Bears.

Bloomfield shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the field after coming off their worst shooting performance a game ago (24.1 percent), while the Cougars hit at a 43.8 percent (28-64) clip. The Bears shot efficiently from deep, 45.5 percent (5-11) to Caldwell's 33.3 percent (5-15) and shot a season-high 89.5 percent at the line to their opponent's 80.0 percent as the CACC unbeaten made more free throws (17) than the Cougars attempted (5). Bloomfield controlled the glass, 41-26, and points in the paint, 38-32. The Bears turned the ball over a ton, 26 times, while forcing just 20 Caldwell mistakes.

Next up, Bloomfield will take their unblemished conference record on the road to face the South Division's Wilmington University. The Wednesday evening matchup is set to get underway at 6:00 pm.
