GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY LEAVES BEARS UNBEATEN IN CACC ROAD WIN

WILMINGTON, D.E. – Senior transfer, Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) recorded her second career double-double as a Bear to lead Bloomfield to a 64-54 win over the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom Tuesday evening at the Joseph West Jones College Center. Golden finished with 14 points and 11 boards in the hard fought road victory that left the Bears still undefeated (9-0) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play and 13-4 overall. The loss dropped the Lightning to 5-4 in league action and 5-13 overall for the year.

Bloomfield won their fourth consecutive game as Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) added 13 points (4-14 FG, 1-2 3FG, 4-6 FT) and senior Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) chipped in 10 points to the visitors scoring effort.  Iman Williams (Shreveport, L.A.) turned in a solid performance with 8 points (4-10 FG) and 9 boards including five on the offensive glass.

Lexi Bruno paced the Goldey-Beacom offense with 14 points while Britani Bryson was a force on the defensive side with 11 boards and a career-high 7 blocks for the game.

Bloomfield trailed for the first three minutes of the opening period until a three-pointer from Smith put the Bears up 7-6 at the 6:43 minute mark. Both teams traded baskets the rest of the way as the high energy first quarter came to a close with the Lightning up 16-14.

A Bryson bucket in the paint gave Goldey-Beacom a 21-16 advantage early in the second stanza but the Bears reeled off the next nine points to establish control. Wilson buried a ball from long distance just before the buzzer sounded for the half that sent her CACC undefeated team to the locker room up 28-23. Bloomfield held the Lightning to just seven points in the quarter and just eight field goals at the break.

The Bears charged out of the locker room on a 6-0 wave that was punctuated by Golden's first points of the evening that broke open a 34-23 lead just 2:30 into the third quarter. The Lightning struck back down the stretch of the period to come out on top 47-45 by quarter's end. The home team scored 24 points in the third as they sat poised for the upset going into the final frame.

The Bears responded again as six points from Golden fueled a 9-3 burst that gave them a 54-48 advantage with 3:22 left.  Two minutes later Bruno buried two from the line to draw Goldey-Beacom to within two.  Four more points from Golden help put the Bears up 10 and the visitors kept that spread to capture the victory.

Golden scored all of her fourteen buckets in the second half with Bloomfield holding the Lightning to seven points again in the fourth quarter. Duarte registered eight points (8-10 FT) and eight boards.  Freshman Ilysia Lewis (Baltimore, M.D.) scored 6 points for the Bears, all in the first two quarters while classmate and fellow DMV native, Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, M.D.) chipped in 8 points as the rookie tandem each had five boards apiece.

Goldey-Beacom outshot Bloomfield, 39.1 percent (18-46) to 31.9 percent (23-72) and where hot from beyond the arc at 45.5 percent (10-22) to 23.1 percent (3-13). Bloomfield won the glass, 45-34, and turned the ball over just 11 times, while forcing 23 Lightning mistakes for a 20-6 margin in points off turnovers. The Bears also owned the paint (38-10) and bench contributions (13-8).

Next up, Bloomfield returns to the road to try their hand at another Northeast-10 school on Monday, Jan 18. The Hawks of Saint Anselm await the Bears for a regional tip off slated for 3:00 pm.
