WILSON'S HEROICS LEAD BLOOMFIELD TO 2-0 WIN OVER AVE MARIA

Titusville, FL - Kirsten Wilson blasted a walk off two-run homer of an attempted intentional walk and also pitched 11 scoreless innings in an incredible performance to boost Bloomfield over Ave Maria University, 2-0.  The end capped a wild game that featured a number of incredible plays by both squads.

"It was really a remarkable game, one of the best I have seen," said head coach Rocco Constantino.  "It was one of those games where it seems everyone in the tournament gathers around to watch the outcome.  Ave Maria is a great team.  They beat the University of Tampa last week, who is one of the top D2 teams in the country and play an incredibly difficult schedule."

The Bears (8-2) threatened in the first when Janese Timmons and Wilson each laced one out singles.  However, two flyouts ended the frame.  The Bears also threatened in the eighth as Annete Daw led off the inning with a single, was bunted to second by Shannon Brennan but then two well struck fly balls by Melissa Yepez and Greta Coleman were knocked down by the wind, which was blowing in consistently all game.

Meanwhile, Wilson (4-0) was ripping through the Gyrenes lineup with relative ease over the first eight innings.  Wilson allowed a single in the first and a single in the third, but both times the runners were thrown out on attempted steals by Bayley Legarreta.

The Bears also erased a one-out walk in the fifth on a nicely turned 4-6-3 double play by Daw and Timmons.

Bloomfield would not face trouble again until the 10th when the Gyrenes led off the inning with a double.  However, the next batter grounded a shot to third baseman Aubrey Orr's left.  She made the stab and caugh the runner too far off second base.  The Bears executed a nice rundown and ultimately Orr recorded the out on a tag after four throws.

Wilson had a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 11th, including her 14th strikeout of the game.  That set the stage for her herocis in the bottom of the inning.

Yepez led off the inning with a walk before Ave Maria was able to get the next two batters on flyouts.  They then chose to walk Wilson for the third time in the game.  However, one of Cheyenne Benson's pitches got too close and Wilson launched it over the right center field fence for the win.

Wilson scattered five hits and had two walks in 11 innings of work.

The Bears were able to reach Benson for seven hits with Wilson recording the only multi-hit game.

"I can't say enough about the effort the team gave today," said Constantino.  "Players were throwing their bodies all over the field, going all out to win and there really just are no words for Kirsten's overall performance.  It's hopefully the kind of game that shows we can play with anyone."

Bloomfield swept Waynesburg University immediately after their win over Ave Maria as well.

The Bears are back in action for their final game of spring training tomorrow morning at 9am.  They will be facing Ave Maria once again and St. Mary of the Woods, who beat Bloomfield 2-1 on Monday.
