Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) poured in a team-high 17 points and classmate
Morgan Taylor (Paterson, N.J.) recorded 12 points to lead the Bloomfield College women's basketball team to Tuesday evening's 74-54 victory against Dominican College at the Hennessy Center.
The Bears, who came into the contest winners of 6 out of their last 7 games, improved to 16-5 on the year and a perfect 12-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action. The Chargers fell to 9-10 overall and 5-5 in league play as Bloomfield swept the regular season series.
Smith shot a mere 3-for-13 from the field, but was 9-for-10 from the line and 2-dor-6 from beyond the arc, in addition to grabbing nine rebounds, snatching four steals and handing out three assists. Taylor also registered 3 field goals on the evening (3-8 FG) with 2 from deep (2-3 3-FG), pulled down four rebounds and dished out two assists. Seniors
Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) and
Iman Williams (Shreveport, La.) were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively (6-16 FG) while classmate
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) registered a season-high 10 boards including 8 on the defensive glass to go along with five assists and two steals.
Deja Gabbidon led Dominican with 19 points and Lisa Bouffard added 15 points and 8 rebounds in the setback.
The Chargers came flying out of the gate with a 9-2 gallop capped by a Gabbidon bucket down low with 6:09 on the clock. Bouffard buried a jumper to end the first quarter's scoring and the CACC North Division leaders were in a 19-11 deficit to the home team.
The Bears struggled to find their way on offense, scoring just one point over a stretch of four minutes that spanned the first and second quarters but a Golden layup sparked an 11-0 spurt that included five points from Taylor to put the visitors up 23-22 with 3:12 to go before the break. Gabbidon answered the run with a 5-point play after converting a bucket, being fouled and netting three free throws with a Bloomfield technical foul being assessed on the play as well. The Bears held their composure and closed out the quarter after a Taylor 3-pointer and two Smith free throws, up 34-31 at the break.
Smith came out of the locker room charged up and scored nine points in the third quarter as the Bloomfield added three points to their overall advantage and went into the final frame ahead 53-47. The Bears defense sprung into action in the fourth quarter and held the Chargers without a field goal for the first five minutes of the period. The CACC unbeaten team's lead ballooned to twenty-one (71-50) after a Williams bucket in the paint and the Bears trotted the rest of the way to their 12
th league win of the season.
Bloomfield outshot Dominican, 39.0 percent (23-59) to 32.8 percent (20-61), including a sharp-shooting performance from deep, 53.8 percent (7-13) to 20.0 percent (4-20), and feasted at the line connecting on more free throws (21) than the Chargers attempted (11). The Bears also dominated the boards, 48-29, including 18-10 on the offensive end, and held a 23-8 stranglehold on second-chance points. Bloomfield owned a 22-12 advantage in points off turnovers after forcing 16 Dominican mistakes but turned it over themselves 18 times.
The victory Tuesday evening ensured the ESPN3 College Basketball Game of the Week Saturday afternoon would feature the CACC's top two undefeated teams. The Bears will lock horns with the Rams on their 'Road Trip to Philly' at 2:00 pm LIVE on ESPN3. Bloomfield, winners of three straight, will look to remain the only unbeaten team in the league as they battle Philly U, riding their own 10-game win streak.
