Cold Bats Result in Doubleheader Sweep by Visiting Goldey-Beacom

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Limestone College baseball team had amble opportunities to come through with a big hit on Saturday afternoon, but it went a combined 2-for-20 with runners in scoring position as Goldey-Beacom College completed a doubleheader sweep with finals of 2-1 and 5-1 at Founders FCU Stadium.

  • He would take the hard-luck loss, falling to 1-2, despite giving up just two runs on six hits
  • Limestone went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position with five strikeouts in game one

HOW IT HAPPENED

Playing in the first game of the season, the Lightning started the year with a base knock before scoring their first run of the 2020 season a few batters later on an RBI double to left. However, the Saints would tie the contest at 1-all in the home half of the second when Huber blasted a solo shot to left-centerfield.

Whetsell started the third with an opposite-field triple into the rightfield corner before Deese was hit to put runners on the corners with nobody out for the Saints. Limestone was unable to capitalize though as the next three batters struck out before Goldey-Beacom moved back in front, 2-1, with a run in the fourth.

The Blue and Gold would strand a two-out double by Stavitski in the fourth before a leadoff single by Huber in the sixth was left in scoring position. The Saints then got back-to-back one-out singles in the seventh, but the home team again was not able to take advantage as the Lighting took game one, 2-1.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Deese walked twice and came through with the only run-scoring knock of the nightcap
  • Junior Ethan Danley (Mount Airy, N.C.) doubled, walked and scored a run
  • Junior Michael Roberts (Mount Airy, N.C.) added a base knock
  • Senior Josh Evans (Indian Land, S.C.) finished with a hit
  • The Saints would go just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the second game
  • Freshman Anthony Alejandro (Rock Hill, S.C.) took the loss after giving up three runs
  • He falls to 0-2 on the season after surrendering two hits and four walks
  • Sophomore reliever Gehrig Spradlin (Roanoke, Va.) struck out five over 3.1 scoreless innings
  • Limestone outhit Goldey-Beacom, 6-4, in the second game

HOW IT HAPPENED

After striking out the side in the top of the second, Alejandro ran into trouble following a leadoff single by the Lightning in the third. Goldey-Beacom would end up batting around in the stanza, despite only recording just the one base hit, as it platted three runs on four walks and a hit batter to make it 3-0.

The Saints ran themselves out of a potential big inning in the home half of the third as the first out was recorded at third base, but they looked primed to breakthrough with a two-out rally in the fourth following back-to-back hits from senior Darren Prebble (Pomfret, Md.) and junior Kyle Strovink (Rocky Point, N.Y.).

The next batter grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat, but Danley opened the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff double. It appeared that he might be stranded as the next two batters were retired quietly, but Deese punched a ball into center for the team's first hit with a runner in scoring position.

Trailing 3-1, Limestone put the tying run on base as Roberts followed up with a single back up the middle, but the next batter went down swinging to leave two men stranded. The Lighting would then add two more runs in the seventh on just one base hit, and the Saints left the bases juiced in the home half.
