LIGHTNING SNAP BEARS WIN STREAK WITH 66-60 CACC ROAD VICTORY

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College women's basketball team had their three game win streak snapped as they suffered a 66-60 setback against Goldey-Beacom College. Bloomfield was led by guard, Morgan Taylor (Paterson, NJ) as she tallied her third career double-double, netting 14 points to go along with her game-high 10 rebounds. Guards, Tianna Smith (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) contributed 12 points each, with Smith also snatching 7 steals. The Bears dropped to 11-8 overall and 9-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play.  The CACC South Division Lightning improved to 11-13 overall and 10-5 in CACC action.

Despite holding Goldey-Beacom to just 39.1% shooting for the game and forcing 23 turnovers, Bloomfield was unable to walk away with the win.

Both teams got off to a slow start as they were plagued by turnovers early on.  Goldey-Beacom went up by as many as six (18-12) with 4:50 to play in the opening period on a Reighly Melochick (Pottsville, Pa.) jumper. The Bears answered with a 10-0 spurt, capped by Taylor jump shot to put them up 22-18 with 3:02 left in the first half. A layup by Lightning guard, Lexi Bruno (Millville, N.J.) tied the game at 22-22 as less than two minutes until the break. Bruno knocked down a three-pointer to give her team the lead (25-24) with 00:37 still to play. Bloomfield re-captured the lead on a Smith layup in the paint to go into the half up 26-25.

The Goldey-Beacom offense began to strike in the second half led by Melochick's 14 points in the second period. The Lightning gained a 46-45 lead with 8:21 to play after Melochick connected from long range. Goldey-Beacom held the lead for most of the second period, fending off all comeback attempts from the Bears. Bloomfield fought back to draw the game even at 57-57 with 2:19 on the clock after a steal by Wilson and a couple of Smith layups. Melochick struck again on her second three pointer of the game with 1:21 remaining to give the Lightning a 60-57 advantage. Melochick closed the game out down the stretch with six free throws to cement the win and secure a post-season birth for Goldey-Beacom.

Melochick finished the afternoon with a game high 20 points. Lightning guard Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ) contributed 19 points and 6 rebounds to the victory. Bruno ended her day with 16 points. On the Bears side of the ball, freshman guard, De'Andra Humphries (Boston, Mass.) came in of the bench to add 8 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. The Lightning held a 21-14 edge in bench production due largely in part to Melochick's efforts. The visitors also held a 27-15 advantage in points off turnovers. Bloomfield managed a 34-24 edge in points in the paint during the setback.

Next up the Bears welcome the Golden Falcons of Felician College on Tuesday, February 10 in the second game of a six-game home stand at the Bloomfield College Gym. Game time is set for a 6:00 pm tip and fans are encouraged to wear maroon for the inaugural 'Maroon Out' game against the CACC North Division foe.
