BEARS ON TOP, 63-58 OVER RAMS IN ESPN3 GAME OF THE WEEK

PHILADELPHIA, P.A. - Take away the ESPN3 lights and cameras and the action still lived up to the billing as the Bloomfield College women's basketball team came out on top, 63-58 over Philadelphia University Saturday afternoon on Herb Magee Court. The Bears dynamic duo of Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) and Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) combined for 35 points to lead the road team during the NCAA Division II Game of the Week.

Bloomfield remained perfect in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play at 13-0 and climbed to 17-5 overall with their fourth consecutive victory. The Rams tasted their first defeat since December 13th and had a twelve-game unbeaten streak in league action snapped as they fell to 12-1 in the CACC and 16-6 overall.

Wilson hit 4 of 8 shots from beyond the arc and was 6 of 8 from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 18 points. The Bears' senior guard also dished out a career-high seven assists and pulled down four rebounds. Smith shot 50.0 percent from the floor (7-for-14) and perfect from the line (2-fo-2) for 17 points while grabbing six boards, three assists and a steal. Freshman Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, M.D.) netted a career-high 13 points (6-11 FG, 1-1 FT) to go along with seven boards and a steal. Senior Iman Williams (Shreveport, La.) scored 8 points (3-5 FG, 2-2 FT) while classmate Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) posted her fifth double-digit rebounding performance in the Bears last six games with 10 for the afternoon.

Bria Young led four PhilaU starters in double figures with 16 points and also snatched five steals, four boards, three assists and a block to round complete the stat sheet.

Bloomfield trailed, 10-4, just five minutes in when Williams converted a bucket in the paint that sparked a 10-0 run, which featured four points each from Smith and McKenzie and opened a 14-10 advantage with 1:00 remaining in the opening quarter. Smith added a jumper before the buzzer that preserved the Bears four-point margin at 16-12 heading into the second frame.

A McKenzie basket in the paint began the second quarter and nudged Bloomfield's advantage to six, as the league's only undefeated team led the entire period. The Rams trimmed their deficit to 18-17 with 6:36 on the clock but sophomore Alexia' Tucker (Halifax, Va.) drained a shot from beyond the arc to cut the home team's 5-0 spurt short. At the break, both divisional top squads had scored fourteen-points which left the Bears four-point edge intact at 30-26.

The Rams charged out of the locker room on an 11-4 romp that was punctuated by two Young free throws that cemented a 37-34 lead just five minutes into the third quarter. The teams traded baskets over the remaining 5:00 and PhilaU owned their first edge at the end of a period, up 43-40.

The momentum shifted in the Gallagher Center as the Rams drained the first two shots of the fourth quarter to bring the home crowd to their feet and kick off a 7-3 spurt with 5:56 on the clock. The Bloomfield faithful that had made the road trip to Philly, watched as the Bears nationally ranked defense held PhilaU scoreless over the next two minutes and orchestrated a 9-0 counter-run to go up 52-50 with 3:46 to play.

The Rams responded and tied the match at 52-52 but Wilson netted a three-ball followed by a Smith jumper that prompted a load roar from the Bears' fans with their team up five with under two minutes to play. The dynamic duo sealed the deal with six consecutive free throws between them down the stretch as Bloomfield capped a 20-8 outburst over the game's final 5:30 to reign as the CACC's only unbeaten team.

Bloomfield outshot PhilaU, 42.3 percent (22-52) to 37.9 percent (22-58) including 36.8 percent (7-19) to 33.3 percent (5-15) from beyond the arc. Bloomfield won the glass, 37-32, but loss the battle in the paint 26-20. The Rams forced 19 Bloomfield mistakes for an 18-11 margin in points off turnovers. The Bears netted 12-of-15 free throws (80.0 %) and dished more assists (16-11).

Bloomfield returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. when they play host to Concordia College at the Bloomfield Gymnasium. Wilson will be honored as she returns home for the first time since scoring her 1,000th career point as a Bear on Jan 22.
