Texans Down Deacons 93-63 on Saturday

The Texans went averaged 90.0 points per game while going 2-0 in the Whataburger Texan Tip-Off Classic.
Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Tarleton State Texan basketball team closed out the 2013 Whataburger Texan Tip-Off Classic with a 30-point win over Bloomfield, downing the Deacons 93-63 at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville Saturday night.
 
The Texans improved to 3-0 on the season for the first time since the 2010-11, while the Deacons dropped to 0-3. Tarleton has now scored 85 points or more in three straight games for the first time since 2006 when it defeated Angelo State 96-69, Abilene Christian 91-59 and then ASU again 94-60.
 
Chuck Guy led the Texans for a second consecutive night, scoring a game-high 23 points and dishing out eight assists as well. De'Andre Upchurch poured in 17 points and Davene Carter led the squad with eight boards in the game. All three players were named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of Saturday's contest, with Guy taking home MVP honors.
 
Guy and Upchurch both hit three-pointers to open the game and give the Texans a quick 6-0 lead before BC got onto the board with a bucket from Marvin Williams. Both teams would then trade baskets over the next few minutes before a 7-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Coleman Furst, gave the Texans a 15-7 advantage with 13:04 left to play in the first half.
 
Three of Tarleton's next five field goals came from behind the arc and the Texans led 31-16 at the 8:08 mark of the half. The Texans would then go on a 13-6 run to take a 44-22 lead with 2:34 remaining and despite the Deacons outscoring the home squad by two points over the final two minutes, the Texans stormed into the halftime break with a 20-point lead up 50-30.
 
Tarleton shot 56.7 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes of play and were led by Upchurch's 14 points at the break. Guy was right behind him with 13 points and five assists before heading into the locker room. Davene Carter did not score in the first half, however he led the team with six rebounds and a blocked shot.
 
BC shot just 37.5 percent from the field and were just 3-for-12 from downtown.
 
Tarleton's defense stifled the Deacons throughout the majority of the second half as well with Bloomfield finishing the contest shooting just 38.2 percent from the field and 18.2 percent from beyond the arc. BC would get back within 16 points of the Texans at the 13:41 mark of the second half, but that would prove to be the closest the Deacons would get.
 
The Texans went up by 30-points thanks to a late 16-5 run and then closed out the contest with a pair of free throws from Michael Hardge to give the home team the 30-point victory.
 
Tarleton finished the game shooting 51.7 percent from the field and a 46.2 percent effort from the three-point line. The Texans have now shot at least 50 percent from the field in its first three contests of the season.
 
Tarleton remained hot at the charity stripe as well on Saturday, converting 21 of its 26 free throw attempts for an 80.8 percent effort.
 
The Deacons out-rebound the Texans 18-10 on the offensive boards, but Tarleton won the overall rebounding battle, 38-37. The Texans finished the game with 20 assists and eight blocked shots, while committing just six turnovers in the ballgame.
 
Tarleton will return to action again Tuesday, Nov. 19, with a home contest against Arlington Baptist. The Texans and Patriots are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. in Stephenville.
