BLOOMFIELD, NJ - Sophomore righty
Kirsten Wilson, the regining CACC Pitcher of the Week, threw her third career no-hitter as Bloomfield split their 2015 home opener with Nyack. Bloomfield won game one, 3-0 and dropped game two, 4-1.
In game one, Bloomfield (11-7, 3-1 CACC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when
Melissa Yepez singled to center and was bunted to second by
Shannon Brennan.
Bayley Legarreta then hit a two-out single to right to drive home Yepez with the first run for the Bears.
Bloomfield scored two more runs in the third when
Shannon Brennan hit a long single to right, scoring Yepez and Wilson to give Bloomfield a 3-0 lead. Brennan's hit came with two outs as well.
That was more than enough for Wilson, who turned in perhaps the best pitching performance of her young career.
Wilson (7-2) struck out the first eight Nyack batters and ended the game with 14 strikeouts. Wilson didn't walk or hit a batter and the only thing that kept Wilson from a perfect game was a two-out error in the sixth inning.
This was Wilson's second no-hitter this season as she previously no-hit Penn State-Hazleton in Florida. She has tossed two one-hitters as well. This marked the second straight game that Bloomfield threw a no-hitter against Nyack.
Stephanie Miller threw a no-hitter against them last year as a freshman in the second game of a doubleheader sweep.
"Kirsten has been excellent all season in the circle and today was no different," said head coach
Rocco Constantino. "Her control and command were as good as they have ever been today. She's really putting up some eye-popping numbers this season and the team has done a good job supporting her on defense when teams do put the ball in play."
Bloomfield had seven hits with Yepez leading the way. The junior centerfielder went 2-3 with two runs scored.
Game two was a different story, as this time it was the Bloomfield bats that were quiet.
The Bears managed just a solo home run by
Greta Coleman in the sixth inning with the Bears already down 4-0. The homer was the fourth for the junior, which tied her for the CACC lead.
Bloomfield threatened after Coleman's homer in the sixth when
Aubrey Orr singled to center and Brennan and
Angela Hauser followed with walks, but nothing materialized from there.
Miller (4-5) pitched well in defeat, tossing a complete game while allowing just two earned runs. Nyack's other to runs came after two two-out errors in the fifth inning.
The Bears managed just six hits in the game, three of them coming from
Lauren Bueno, who went 3-4 in the game.
"We have to find a way to generate more offense," said Constantino. "Stephanie has pitched three tremendous games since returning from Florida and only has one win to show for it. That's not right and it's something we'll work on fixing as the season progresses. Nyack played well and I give a lot of credit to their pitcher, but we have to swing the bats a lot better."
Bloomfield is set to continue CACC action on Thursday with a doubleheader against Concordia College. The game is slated for a 3pm start at Concordia but pending rain could change the time or location. Follow
