Bloomfield College Not Effected by Venue Change as Lady Deacons Drop GCU, 85-56

Octivia Booker
Lakewood, N.J.- In a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's contest that was originally slated to be played in north Jersey, Bloomfield College adapted nicely to its home for a day as the Lady Deacons cruised to an 85-56 conference victory over Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon in the GCU Wellness Center. The contest was moved south due to icy conditions on the Bloomfield campus.

With the victory, the Lady Deacons improve their record to 15-8 (13-3 CACC) while the Lions post a mark of 3-20 (2-13 CACC).

The Lions enjoyed a pleasant start to the contest as GCU jumped out to an 11-6 lead after an Octivia Booker three-pointer 4:17 into the affair. Bloomfield answered with a 9-0 run that concluded with a Ivettlis Castro (Sr.-Carteret, N.J.) three-ball, making the score 15-11 Lady Deacons with 12:31 to go. The advantage grew to seven points at 24-17 after a layup and subsequent free throw by Illriana Lulgjuraj (Sr.-Bloomfield, N.J.) with 7:50 on the clock.

GCU responded by rattling of an 8-0 spurt to take a slim 25-24 lead with 3:59 left before intermission, courtesy of an Ashiri Broadwater jumper. With the score knotted at 26 with 3:06 to go, the Lady Deacons pulled out a second 9-0 push to take a stanza-best 35-26 advantage at 1:38. The Lions drained four straight free throws to close the half down 35-30.

The second frame belonged entirely to Bloomfield as the Lady Deacons outscored the Lions, 50-26, in the period. The final score represented the second 29-point surplus for BC in the half.

Castro, who scored her 1,000th career point in the contest, drained a game-high 19, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe for Bloomfield. Ariel Wilson (So.-Chesapeake, Va.) added 15 points with four assists and team-best four steals. Lauren Deverin (Jr.-Sewaren, N.J.) contributed 12 points, snared six boards, and tallied four blocks in 19 minutes off the BC bench while Lulgjuraj added 10 points of her own in 16 minutes of action.

Broadwater topped the Lions with 14 points and three assists in 31 minutes. Brittany Baker dropped in 13 points in 24 minutes while Octivia Booker matched a personal season-best with her 10 points. Tahira Matthews grabbed a team-high eight boards to go with eight points on the afternoon.

GCU next takes the floor Tuesday evening with a 6:00 p.m. road contest at Chestnut Hill College. The Lions fell to the Griffins, 66-63, in their last meeting back on January 11 in the "Well".
