BEARS STUMBLE IN DOUBLE OT ON THE ROAD AGAINST THE PANTHERS

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Senior transfer Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) recorded her first double-double as a Bear but it was not enough as Bloomfield suffered a heart-breaking 84-70 double overtime loss to Adelphi University Sunday afternoon on the road. The non-conference regional showdown saw Golden pour in 11 points and grab 17 rebounds including twelve on the defensive glass alone with the visiting team dropping to 9-3 on the season. The Panthers improved to 9-3 in 2015 as well with the home win.

Golden was one-of-five Bloomfield players who finished with double-figures, led by junior Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) who netted 19 points, shot 7-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line to go along with six rebounds, five steals, four assists and a blocked shot before fouling out in the fourth quarter.  Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) and Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, M.D.) each contributed 12 points and 6 boards while Iman Williams (Shreveport, La.) scored 10 points and 8 rebounds in twenty-eight minutes of work on the court.

Ashley Gomez paced the Panthers offense with a game-high 24 points (7-23 FG, 8-13 FT). Calli Balfour also contributed to the home team's attack, snagging 11 boards and 21 points for the afternoon.

After spotting Adelphi the first five points of the game, the Bears clawed out a 16-15 lead at the end of the opening quarter of play on a Wilson jumper. The second quarter yielded even better benefits for the visiting squad as Bloomfield expanded their lead to eight heading into the break up 29-21. The Panthers were held to just six points in the second period and were out-rebounded 24-9 for the half.

In the third frame, Smith took a dish from Golden for a layup in the paint that gave the Bears their largest edge of the afternoon, 33-23 before Adelphi stormed back with an 11-0 spurt to take the lead. Smith buried a ball from beyond the arc to close out the 3rd quarter with the teams deadlocked at 39-39.

Early in the fourth period of play the teams battled back and forth until a steal by Smith led to a fast-break layup at the other end to put her team up 47-44 at the 7:18 minute mark. With 3:52 remaining in regulation, Gomez knocked down a three-pointer that capped an Adelphi 14-2 outburst to put the regionally ranked Bears on their heels. Smith looked to lead a comeback but Bloomfield's top scorer fouled with less than three minutes to go and the freshman, McKenzie stepped up in her absence to net two buckets that forced overtime with the teams tied at 59-59.

With the Bears number one scoring option out of the game, Adelphi's duo of Balfour and Gomez combined for 18 of the Panthers 25 points in double overtime giving Bloomfield their third loss of the season.

Adelphi outshot the Bears, 39.4 percent (28-71) to 35.8 percent (24-67), and were slightly better from beyond the arc, 23.5 percent (4-17) to 22.2 percent (2-9). Both the glass (61-40) and points in the paint (34-28) belong to the Bears, while the Panthers forced a season-high, 33 turnovers from Bloomfield.

The Bears will hibernate for the week of Christmas before setting back out on the road to close out the 2015 calendar year on December 30th against Stonehill College. The 6:00 pm tipoff against the Skyhawks will be Bloomfield's seventh non-conference showdown this season.
