BEARS SNAP SIX-GAME SLIDE WITH 5-3 WIN OVER MAVERICKS

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2016) – Junior lefty Charles Castellano (Bayonne, N.J.) pitched an eight and a third inning gem to help the Bears baseball team snap their six-game losing streak Wednesday afternoon during a, 5-3 victory over Mercy College on the road at Mercy Field.

Bloomfield improved to 2-7 overall on the season as Castellano moved to 2-0 in 2016 while the Mavericks dropped to 4-9 with the non-conference setback.

Castellano went the first 8 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits and struck out three while walking just two batters. Yordani Nicascio (Paterson, N.J.) finished off the game in the ninth to earn the save. Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) led Bloomfield at the plate with a 2-for-4 day and two RBI.

Kenny Costa picked up the loss on the Mavericks side as he tossed six innings with three earned runs allowed and two strikeouts.

Mercy jumped on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the third. Bloomfield answered with two runs in the fourth on two hits and an error. Cristopher Cabral (Lodi, N.J.) singled with two outs and then Isaac Pichardo (Passaic, N.J.) doubled down the left field line to score Cabral from first and tie the contest at 1-1. A dropped fly ball off the bat of Luis Hidalgo (Ridgefield, Park, N.J.) led to Pichardo scoring from second to give Bloomfield a 2-1 advantage.

Montero came to life in the fifth inning as he drove in a pair on an RBI single to left that increased the Bear lead to 4-1. Bloomfield did most of their damage with two outs, with Luke Loughery (Sussex, N.J.) and Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) both singling to allow Montero to drive them in.

Castellano cruised thru four consecutive innings, retiring the Mavericks in three up – three down fashion during the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th.  The Bears added a run in the top of the ninth after a single to right by Montero allowed the first baseman to later score on a wild pitch to make it 5-1. Mercy picked up two runs on Castellano with a late rally but Nicascio came in and closed the door for his first save of the year.

Next up Bloomfield travels to Bronxville, N.Y. to face another non-conference foe in the Pioneers of LIU Post on Thursday Mar 17th. First pitch is set to go at 3:00 pm from the Pioneers Baseball Field.
