Box Score TITUSVILLE, FL - The Bloomfield College softball team dropped two of three games in a triple-header on the third day of their Spring Training trip in Florida. The Bears split with Waldorf College and then dropped a single game against St. Mary of the Woods.
Â
In game three of the day, Bloomfield faced a strong St. Mary of the Woods team and battled closely until the end.
Â
Kelly Stites made her first career start as a Bear and was masterful through four shutout innings. She allowed just three hits while keeping the Pomeroys off-balance for much of the game.
Â
Stites gave way to
Stephanie Miller, who pitched out of a jam in the fifth and then again received bad luck in the sixth.
Â
Miller (2-2) allowed a leadoff double and then induced a grounder. However, the ball was thrown away and runners were on the corners with no outs.
Kirsten Wilson then replaced Miller and got the first out of the inning on a strikeout.
Â
However, St. Mary of the Woods executed a squeeze play that scored two runs when the ball was thrown away. It was all the support the Pomeroys would need as Bloomfield's bats were quiet once again.
Â
The Bears loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not get the clutch hit they needed.
Â
In the sixth, Wilson singled,
Lauren Bueno reached on a fielder's choice and
Melissa Yepez and
Annette Daw followed with singles to load the bases. However, pinch hitter
Angela Hauser's hard ground ball was snagged for the third out.
Â
In the seventh,
Shannon Brennan and Stites led off with singles to put runners on first and second.
Greta Coleman then laced the Bears' third consecutive single to score
Bayley Legarreta, who had pinch run for Brennan. Stites advanced to third on the play while Coleman moved to second on the throw.
Â
St. Mary of the Woods chose to walk Wilson intentionally to load the bases with one out to bring up Bueno, the team's cleanup hitter. Bueno smoked a line drive right at the shortstop, who in turn doubled Stites off of third for the final out.
Â
Coleman was 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI while Wilson and Stites were 2-3.
Â
The Bears will be back in action for their second consecutive triple-header tomorrow starting at 1pm.
Â
They will take on Florida power Ave Maria in a single game then face off against Waynesburg University in a doubleheader.
