Box Score vs. BloomfieldLOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Sept. 5) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team opened the season on Friday with a pair of victories over Glenville State and Bloomfield (N.J.) at the Lock Haven Tournament.
The Vulcans opened play on Friday morning with a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-14, 25-8) against Glenville State, highlighted by a dominating .636 hitting percentage in the third set. Senior
Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the team with six kills, as a total of 11 players collected at least one kill in the victory. Sophomore
Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished with five kills on seven attempts and freshman
Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) tallied four kills on six attempts in her college debut. Fellow freshman
Taylor Solo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) registered 16 assists in the season-opening match and junior
Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) added eight assists, two service aces and six digs.
Miller and sophomore
Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) both posted a team-best seven digs, while sophomore
Kayla Smith (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) finished with four blocks (one solo).
Cal U later recorded a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-13, 23-25, 25-17) over Bloomfield on Friday evening at Thomas Fieldhouse. Hayes and Miller both led the team with 11 kills and Hayes finished with a .556 hitting percentage. Junior
Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) tallied nine kills in the victory, while sophomore
Abby Matusik (Mars, Pa./Mars) and redshirt freshman
Rachel Snyder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each added eight kills. Solo and sophomore
Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) directed the offense with 27 and 15 assists, respectively, in the victory.
Miller recorded a kill/dig double-double in the nightcap, as she posted a team-best 20 digs. Rudy finished 11 digs, while the trio of Litoborski, Matusik and Solo each collected at least eight digs. At the net, Hayes combined for seven blocks and Snyder finished with six blocks.
Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 6, when it faces Northwood and Lake Erie at the Lock Haven Tournament.
