THE GRIFFINS SWEEP BEARS IN CACC BASEBALL ACTION

PHILADELPHIA, P.A. – The Bloomfield College baseball team dropped two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road contests Saturday to Chestnut Hill College. The Bears suffered a disappointing 13-2 loss in game one and lost at the hands of yet another comeback victory in a 16-9 game two defeat.

In game one the Griffins soared. Charles Castellano (Bayonne, N.J.) got the start on the mound for the Bears and couldn't find a way to slow down the Chestnut Hill offense. The Griffins kicked things off in the bottom of the second, scoring a run on a throwing error by Castellano on a failed pickoff attempt to give them a 1-0 lead. They got right back to it in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits making it 5-0.

Bloomfield answered back in the top of the fifth as Carlos Flete (Jamaica, N.Y.) led off with a double to left center, Cris Cabral (Lodi, N.J.) reached on an error, and Ray Lang (Middlesex, N.J.) walked. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Bloomfield managed to scratch across one run. Freshman, Isaac Pichardo (Passaic, N.Y.) grounded into a 4-6-3 double play which drove in a run to make it 5-1 but slowed down any momentum the Bears had. Brandon Morales (Hialeah, F.L.) came up and struck out swinging to end the inning.

Chestnut Hill drove in two more runs off of Castellano in the sixth to end his day and Isaiah Arroyo (Tampa, F.L.) came in and gave up two more runs in the sixth before getting out of the jam with Bloomfield in a 9-1 hole. Arroyo surrendered four more in the seventh as the Griffins blew it open taking a 13-1 lead.

Mark Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) came in to pitch in the bottom of the eighth and was able slow down the Griffin's offense for the inning.
The Bears scored one more time in the ninth when Juan Hilario (Bronx, N.Y.) worked a one out walk and came around to score on a Shadi Azar (South San Francisco, C.A.) two out double into the right center field gap making the final score 13-2.

Bloomfield went down early in game two as Chestnut Hill scored in each of the first three innings plating one in the first, one in the second, and two in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

This game the Bears took advantage of their opportunities. Flete, who swung a hot bat all day, laced a one out single in the fourth to spark his team's offense. Cabral followed with an RBI double to left center, making it 4-1. With two outs, Pichardo came up and singled through the left side that drove in Cabral and trimmed the deficit to 4-2. Pichardo stole second and then scored on a Morales single to left to make it 4-3.

Freshman starting pitcher, Steven Acosta (Lakewood, N.J.) settled in and got into a groove to keep his team in the game.

In the top of the sixth Bloomfield took their first lead of the day scoring three runs on four hits making it 7-4. Pichardo hit a booming one hop double off the right field wall to start the rally and then scored on a throwing error by the Griffin's shortstop. Hilario doubled down the left field line that drove in one, Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) had an RBI sac-fly to center and Flete drove in a run with an RBI single.

Acosta got into some trouble early on in the seventh and the Bears brought in junior, Kyle Murzyn (Glassboro, N.J.) to stop the bleeding. Murzyn was unable to protect his team's lead and surrendered four runs and Chestnut Hill took a 10-7 advantage. Senior, Lucas Junger (Waretown, N.J.) came in to get the final out of the seventh.

The Griffins extended their lead to 16-7 on Junger and blew the game open once again.

Bloomfield pushed two runs across in the ninth to make the final score 16-9. Flete drove in Azar with an RBI double to right center and later scored on an RBI single by Lang.

The Bears get back on the field Monday as they travel to the Rockville Centre in New York to take on Molloy College.
