BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College women's basketball team continued their unbeaten streak in league play with a 65-48 decision over Chestnut Hill College Friday evening. Senior
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) poured in 13 total points including her 1,000th career point as a Bear in the opening quarter.
The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) top team moved to a perfect 11-0 in conference action and 15-5 overall. The Griffins dropped to 6-11 overall on the year and 4-6 in CACC match ups.
Wilson went 5-for-13 from the field and knocked in 3-for-6 from beyond the arc to go along with four rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists. Junior
Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) led the Bloomfield scoring attack with 17 points (6-16 FG, 3-6 3-FG, 2-2 FT) and grabbed six boards, three assists and a steal on the evening. Senior
Chyna Golden (Neptune, N.J.) corralled a game-high, 13 rebounds and chipped in seven points and a block. Sophomore
Jahniece Jaffe (Egg Harbor, N.J.) came off the bench to give the Bears 9 points on 3-for-7 shooting from long range.
Caity Kuhnen and Jaeda Wildgoose scored 13 and 12 points respectively for Chestnut Hill.
After falling behind, 7-4 on a Kuhnen 3-pointer, the Bears went on a scorching 21-0 run – powered by eight points from Wilson – to grab an eighteen-point to close out the first quarter. Midway thru the run, Wilson buried back-to-back buckets from beyond the arc, the second of which eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau for the senior at the 2:47 minute mark.
Wilson buried a jumper and then a 3-pointer on consecutive Bloomfield possessions that put the home team up 32-16 with under two minutes remaining. The Bears saw their senior score all 13 of her points on a milestone night in the first half as the team went into the break leading, 34-20.
Smith came out of the locker room aggressive and buried a three-ball to start the scoring in the third quarter. Senior,
Iman Williams (Shreveport, La.) scored in the paint on the Bears next possession to give the CACC North Division #1 team their largest lead of the game, 39-20. The Griffins traded baskets with the home team during the quarter and found themselves down 53-39 heading into the final frame.
The Bloomfield advantage never dipped below double figures as they held the visitors to nine points in the fourth quarter to close out the win. Smith did most of her damage in the second half as she picked up the scoring duties from Wilson to net 12 points across the final two periods.
Bloomfield narrowly outshot Chestnut Hill, 34.7 percent (26-75) to 31.6 percent (18-57), but forced 26 mistakes that they turned into 18 points. The Bears also edged the Griffins on the glass (48-44), and in second chance points (10-9) and featured a better assist-to-turnover ratio (13/15-11/26).
The Bears look to hit the road after Storm Jonas blows over on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 5:30 p.m. when they take on Dominican College. Then next Saturday, Jan. 30 they hit the 'Road Trip to Philly' to face the CACC South Division's top team and currently unbeaten Rams at 2:00 p.m. The next home game for the Bears is Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. when they play host to Concordia College at the Bloomfield College Gym.
