BLOOMFIELD, NJ– The Den rocked Saturday afternoon as Bloomfield hosted the regionally ranked Rams from Jefferson and came away with a, 71-67 win at home. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) juggernauts battled for sole passion of the overall top spot in the upcoming post-season conference tournament as the Bears edged in front with just two games to go in the regular-season.
Bloomfield (17-9, 15-2 CACC), now riding an eight-game win-streak, celebrated Senior Day in a pre-game ceremony that honored
Keith Washington (Philadelphia, PA) and
Kavione Green (Amityville, NY) for their contributions to the men's basketball program. The senior tandem went on to deliver big time as Washington eclipsed 1,000 points in a Bear uniform, dropping a team-high 21 points while Green put his stamp on the contest by snagging a career-best and game-high 22 rebounds, including 12 off the defensive glass.
The visitors used an efficient offense in the opening half to secure a, 40-35 advantage over Bloomfield on the scoreboard. The Rams shot 45.5 percent from the field and drained 8-of-8 from the free throw line before heading into the locker room. The home team converted 13-of-35 shots from the floor (37.1 percent) in the 1
sthalf and knew there was room for improvement heading into the 2
ndstanza.
A 9-0 run to start the final period for Jefferson had the region's 5
thranked team flying high, up 14 (49-35) with 17:17 on the clock. Bloomfield, masters at home with an 8-2 mark, weathered the storm and slowly began to chip away at their deficit. The home crowd erupted when the Bears finally pulled in front, 61-60 off a
Matt Lajeunesse (Union, NJ) dunk from a
Rich Chapman (Newark, NJ) feed. Bloomfield would hold on down the stretch to secure their second win over a regionally ranked team this week.
Lajeunesse finished the game with a modest double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds while Chapman ended his day with 12 points and 3 assists.
The Bears travel to their next opponent for a CACC North Division battle with Post University. The Eagles welcome the top squad in the north for a 7:30 pm tip-off in The Drubner Center.
