2ND HALF STRIKES HELP BEARS SOAR OVER FIREBIRDS, 3-2

NEWARK, DEL. — The Bloomfield College (1-0) men's soccer team opened their 2017 campaign with a 3-2 win over the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) (0-1) on Thursday afternoon at the Wilmington University Tournament in Delaware.

The Bears served as home team on the neutral grounds of the WU Athletic Complex and fell behind late in the first half on a PK by the Firebirds' Gabriel Torres after a Bloomfield defender was called for a handball in the box in the 44th minute. As the Bears exited the field for intermission, first year head coach, Didier Orellana was there to greet them and lift their spirits.

The coach's words of inspiration challenged the team and they soared out of the halftime break and even the match just 35 seconds in when Alistair Hughes (Blantyre, Scotland) benefited from a Firebirds turnover on their side of the pitch and Regsan Watkins (Cape Town, South Africa) assisted with a beautiful ball for the international striker to bury into the top side of the net. Bloomfield stayed relentless on the attack and quickly took the lead less than two minutes later when Watkins found Arman Bashiri (Lovenstad, Norway) for long run down on the right side that resulted in junior transfer's first goal as a Bear.

In the 63rd minute, senior Jovan Stanojkovic (Pancevo, Serbia) helped sophomores Nicholas Calabia (Palisades Park, NJ) and Warwick Sterling (Lauderhill, Fla) combine for Bloomfield's final score of the day as the long ball from the keeper was headed on by Calabia and Sterling knocked it past the UDC goalie.
Torres tacked on another Firebirds' goal at the 79:29 minute-mark but Stanojkovic closed the door the rest of the way picking up 3 saves during the match.

With his first win as the skipper of the Bears under his belt, Orellana will look to keep Bloomfield undefeated when they return to the WU Athletic Complex on Saturday to tackle the Marauders of Millersville University. Game time on the pitch is set for 2:00 pm with Live Stats and Video links available on the website.
