Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Three Setters Record Five Points as Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – Freshman Rachael Casasanta scored five times to help life Pace over Post University by a score of 17-6. The Setters advance to 3-1, 1-1 NE-10 while Post falls to 0-4, 0-1 CACC.

Casasanta got things going early after she set up for a free position shot and scored just 49 seconds into the game. Less than a minute later, Courtney Sulfaro found the back of the net to stretch the lead to 2-0. Post scored back-to-back goals just 36 second apart from each other, but not before Casey Gelderman and Emily Ankabrandt both scored their first of the day. With 18:20 to play in the opening half, the Setters rallied for five unanswered goals over the next 15 minutes. Ankabrandt put in her second of the game before Gelderman scored, on the assist by Makayla McDermott to put Pace up 6-2. The pivotal run was ended with scores by Sulfaro, McDermott, and Casasanta with Gelderman and McDermott each picking up an assist. Post closed out the half on a 2-1 rally with Gelderman netting the hat-trick score for Pace.

The Setters may have played their best lacrosse of the young season to start the second half. Just under five minutes into the final period, Casasanta scored her third of the contest. The goal that stretched the Pace lead to 11-4 was the spark of seven consecutive goals by Pace. Ankabrandt found twine for her third time of the day that was followed by a goal by Sulfaro just 15 seconds later, with Cassandra Pacelli picking up the assist. Shortly after McDermott was able to pick up her fourth helper of the contest as she registered assists on back-to-back goals by Casasanta and Sulfaro. Pace concluded the scoring output with a pair of goals by Gelderman, for her fourth, and Casasanta who scored her game-best fifth goal of the contest. After Post added a pair of goals down the stretch, the Setters were able to defeat Post, 17-6.
Casasanta added a pair of groundballs to her career-best five scores. Gelderman netted four scores with four groundballs, a pair of draw controls and a caused turnover while Sulfaro added four groundballs, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls to her four goals. Ankabrandt scooped up a trio of groundballs to go along with her three scores. McDermott continues to excel as a passer as she recorded four assists with a goal and three groundballs.

The Setters played a trio of freshman between the pipes. Alissa Silvestri picked up the win after playing 27:39 with six saves and only two goals allowed. Jillian Oross relieved her and played 14:52, making three saves while allowing a pair of scores. Lesly Sanchez Alvarez played the final 17:29 of action and allowed just a pair of goals.

The Setters put their two-game win streak on the line this Saturday, March 21st when they take on NE-10 rival Bentley. The game will kick off at 3:00 p.m. at Ossining High School.
