ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - Sophomore Tianna Smith (Nanuet, N.Y.) scored a team-high 13 points, but the Bloomfield College women's basketball team fell to Dominican College, 56-50, Tuesday evening on the road at the Hennessy Center. The Bears dip to 8-6 on the season, including 6-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play, while the Chargers improve to 7-9 overall and 5-2 in conference action.
Scott shot 5-for-8 from the field, including 1-for-2 from 3-point range, and 2-for-6 from the line, while pulling down three rebounds and handing out five assists. Senior Tierra Scott (Bear, Del.) and junior Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) were also in double figures with 11 points each in their starting roles for the evening. Sophomore Shannon McGill (Staten Island, N.Y.) paced Dominican College with 15 points while junior Deja Gabbidon (Teaneck, N.J.) secured a double-double, snagging 13 points and rebounds respectively.
Neither team scored for the first 5:21 until a Charger free throw from guard Lashonda Hathorne (Queens, N.Y.) and a subsequent lay up by the senior sparked a 3-0 outbreak for the home team. Smith answered in kind, with a lay up and free throw of her own and the score was knotted again at 3-3 with 12:41 on the clock. The CACC North Division foes would battle to two more ties in the half, first on a 3-pointer by Smith at the 5:00 minute mark (13-13) and then again on a Gabbidon bomb from beyond the arc (18-18) with 2:38 remaining until halftime. The Bears would take a 21-18 advantage into the locker room after connecting on 3-out of-6 free throws before the end of the period.
After the Bears expanded their lead to seven, an 8-1 stretch capped by a Gabbidon lay up in the paint brough the teams even again at 30-30. The squads would trade baskets to the tune of three more ties until Dominican used an 8-0 run to seize control over a two-minute span that the Bears never recovered from. Bloomfield came as close as four points (50-54) on a three-pointer by freshman De'Andra Humphries (Boston, Mass.) with 1:01 to go on the clock but the Chargers would sink a pair of free throws and solidify the victory.
Humphries finished the game with 7 points and 6 rebounds for the Bears while Hathorne chipped in 11 points and 9 boards for the Chargers. Bloomfield outshot Dominican, 36.2 percent (17-47) to 34.9 percent (22-63), but the free throw line cost the Bears who made only 11-24 (45.8%) to the Chargers 6-10 (60.0%). The Chargers also won the battle on the glass, 44-34, including 19-5 on the offensive end which lead to a 22-8 edge in 2nd-chance points.
The Bears return to action Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1:00 p.m. when they play host to regionally ranked Stonehill College at the Bloomfield Gymnasium.
