WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman guard,
De'Andra Humphries (Boston, Mass) came in off the bench to score nineteen fueling Bloomfield College's 72-57 victory over the Firebirds from the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Saturday afternoon. The Bears improve to 2-1 this season on 45.6% shooting from the field while limiting the Firebirds to a season-low 30.2% and handing regionally ranked UDC (3-1) their first loss of the year.
Bloomfield surrendered the first two points of the game on free throws by
Tajruba Baldwin-Kollore (Newport News, Va.) after a foul by senior
Tierra Scott (Bear, D.E.) however the Bears would never trail again, going on a 14-2 run to take command over the East Region's 4th ranked team. The Firebirds attempted to close the gap in the period but a 3-pointer to end the half by Humphries left the margin intact at 36-26. Junior
Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) poured in eleven points to lead all scorers at the break and along with Humphries nine point effort in the opening stanza, accounted for more than half of Bloomfield's offense heading into the lockeroom.
On the road, the Bears refused to let the UDC crowed get into the game and after a Scott lay-up the lead stretched to fifteen (41-26) just a minute and a half into the 2nd period. The advantage ballooned to as many as twenty-three (70-47) after two free throws by Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Week 1 Honor Roll player,
Tianna Smith (Nanuet, N.Y.) with 3:33 remaining on the clock. Smith closed out the scoring for Bloomfield with a late lay up and gave the Bears their second win over an East Coast Conference (ECC) team for the season. Humphries netted 10 points in the second half and finished the game 8-for-11 from the field for her career-best as a Bear.
Wilson ended the contest with 13 total points to go along with 3 assists and 2 steals. Smith snagged a season-high 5 steals while netting 12 points during the win and Scott just missed a double-double, scoring 10 points and game-high 9 rebounds. For UDC,
Telisha Turner (Wilmington, D.E.) had a team-high 15 points while Baldwin-Kollore finished the game with 12 points. Forward
Tatyana Calhoun (Disputanta, Va.) grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds for the Firebirds.
The Bears will now hibernate for Thanksgiving break before returning to action at home Saturday, November 29th to host the Yellow Jackets of American International College. The non-conference tilt is set to tip-off at 1:00 pm inside the Bloomfield College Gym.
Before the contest against the Firebirds the Bears women's basketball team was proud to present can goods gathered from a food drive at Bloomfield College to help benefit
the needy in the DC area through Martha's Table during the holidays. UDC asked all of their visiting opponents in the month of November to help with this initiative and the SAAC and women's basketball team would like everyone who donated from the Bloomfield College community to such a great cause. We wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
