STOW, Ohio -- The 20th-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (18-5 overall) notched a 6-1 victory over Wilmington University (10-6 overall) on Saturday.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Senior
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) and sophomore
Stephanie Stamate (Windsor, Ont.) were first off the courts after falling 6-3 in their No. 2 doubles match against Laura Gil and Andrea Ribalta.
Senior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore
Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) were next off the courts after winning 6-2 at No. 3 doubles vs. Begona Gomar and Anushka Sathe.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) and freshman
Laura Cazacu (London, England) clinched the doubles point (6-2) versus Tess Paya and Sabrina Blasi-Smith.
SINGLES RESULTS
Kuznetsova was the first to finish, nearly blanking Gomar at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-1).
Liong was next to finish, winning her No. 3 doubles match against Gil (6-3, 6-1).
At No. 2 singles, Cazacu defeated Sathe (6-2, 6-1).
Douglas fell in her No. 4 singles match vs. Paya (6-1, 6-2).
At No. 6 singles, Stamate won her match versus Blasi-Smith (6-4, 6-0).
Freshman
Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) notched a victory against Ribalta at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-3).
UP NEXT
The Green and Gold will continue play in Stow, Ohio, on April 7 in a 1:00 p.m. match against Indiana (PA).
