BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bears women's basketball team suffered a 51-59 loss at the hands of the Greyhounds of Assumption College Sunday afternoon in a non-conference tilt in the Bloomfield College Gym. The loss, Bloomfield's 2nd straight, leaves the Bears at 5-5 overall to end the 2014 calendar year while the Hounds improve to 9-2 heading into the winter break.
Bloomfield only managed one starter in double-figures on the afternoon as sophomore guard, Tianna Smith (Nanuet, N.Y.) netted 15 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Senior center, Tierra Scott (Bear, D.E.) came off the bench to pour in 10 points and recorded 6 blocks against the Northeast 10 opponents. On the other side of the ball Kelly Carey (Long Beach, N.Y.) notched a career-high 27 points including 7-for-8 from beyond the arc during the victory. Junior
Kelly Conley (Ellington, Conn.) added 11 points to the Hounds offensive effort while senior
Caitlin Ackerman (Nashua, N.H.) snagged a game-high 9 rebounds to bolster 9 points for the afternoon.
The Bears battled the Greyhounds early in the first half, knotting the score at 10-10 on a Scott lay up in the paint at the 14:45 mark. Assumption then ran off a 9-2 advantage before Bloomfield clawed back with a 8-0 spurt of their own, capped by a fastbreak bucket by Smith to draw even at 19 and a subsequent freethrow to complete a conventional three-point play to give the Bears a 20-19 lead. Bloomfield never saw a lead again as the Greyhounds closed out the half up nine after a 15-5 outburst before the break.
Bloomfield did not fair much better in the beginning of the second half when a Carey three-pointer hit the bottom of the net, giving the visitors a 39-29 lead with 18:35 on the clock. The Bears dug their claws in and mounted a comeback to pull within five (46-51) on a conventional three-point play by Smith. The Hounds converted the next seven points to push their advantage to twelve (58-46) capped by another Carey deep-ball at the 2:01 minute mark and cruised the rest of the way for the win.
The Bears will hibernate for the Winter break before returning to action on Saturday, January 3rd, at 1:00 pm when they host Wilmington University.
