WEYMOUTH, Mass. (May 13, 2019) -- Goldey-Beacom grabbed all the momentum early against fellow-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Concordia College and did not relinquish, rolling to a 4-0 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Weymouth, Mass., on Monday.
 
The Lightning's third NCAA Tournament triumph in program history is the first via shutout and the second against a CACC opponent.  The first such CACC win came in 2015, a 5-3 victory over Chestnut Hill.
 
Third-seeded GBC (15-4) is on to the second round and will battle No. 2 seed Stonehill, beginning at noon at the Weymouth Club in Weymouth, MA.
 
Junior Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela) got things going for the Lightning with a 6-3 triumph at second doubles over Kristel Kalm and Katrina Sta Cruz from the sixth-seeded Clippers (15-8).
 
The highly anticipated rubber at first doubles between 13th-ranked sophomores Lotte Lesscher y Post(Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) against No. 40 Angelica Karlsson and Josefina Torres lived up to the hype.  The battle went to a tiebreak before Goldey-Beacom found its way to a 7-6 (9-7) triumph for the double point.
 
It was their 20th victory of the year, the most by one team in school history and one off the mark set last season by Frekrika Regner.
 
The momentum and enthusiasm carried into singles play.  This started with Zheng rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at second singles over Kalm.  It was Zheng's team-leading 17th singles triumph of the season, tied for the third most in program annals.
 
Junior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) kept things going at fifth singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Franziska Putschbach for a 3-0 GBC lead.  Lesscher y Post ended things with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Karlsson for her 15th singles victory of the season.
 
The Lightning also won their opening sets in the three unfinished matches.  Freshman Elin Anderson (Conwy, Wales) was up 6-4 at third singles, junior Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) held a 6-4 cushion at No. 4 singles and freshman Andrea Fresneda (Valencia, Spain) opened a 6-1 margin at sixth singles.
