NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEE: Joanne Mamie (Holy Family University)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (July 10, 2019) -- Joanne Mamie has a tremendous work ethic and it has already taken her many places, but that's only the beginning of what appears to be a terrific career as her collegiate days wind down.

Mamie, a four-year letterwinner on the Holy Family University women's lacrosse team, has stood out at her institution in so many ways, including in the classroom and the surrounding community.

In the classroom, the senior boasts an impressive 3.81 cumulative grade point average in nursing, and will be moving on to become a nurse in the United States Navy. She has already put her passion and love of nursing to good use in her surrounding community through various groups and community engagement activities.

By making an impact in all three facets of her collegiate career, Mamie was a perfect choice to be Holy Family's nominee for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

IN HER WORDS...

"Being a student athlete has provided me with various skills to succeed, including confidence. The confidence that I gained motivated me to become captain of the women's lacrosse team, to serve on the Athletics Advisory Board, to be elected President of the Student Nurses' Association, and to apply for and be accepted into the Navy Nurse Candidate Program, despite being told by others that the it would be very difficult to be accepted into such a prestigious program. The confidence, discipline, courage, and leadership that I gained as a student athlete at Holy Family has prepared me to be a member of the U.S. Navy as a Nurse. Since high school, I knew that I wanted to serve our country's military heroes. As the Student Nurses' Association President, I created and led a service project to benefit the Veteran members of the Snyder Rehabilitation House in Philadelphia. I also developed a community scholarly project which highlighted the problem of Veterans with PTSD in the community. I presented this project to senior nursing students. This research and service that I preformed has prepared me to serve the population I wish to work with as a Navy nurse. My dream is to be deployed on a humanitarian or disaster relief mission aboard a Naval Hospital Ship and focus on service members with PTSD. I hope to take the skills that I have learned through being a student athlete and make a difference in the lives of our nation's military heroes."

Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers. The NCAA encourages member schools to honor their top graduating female student-athletes each year by submitting their names for consideration for the Woman of the Year award.

Next, conferences will select up to two nominees each from the pool of school nominees (that announcement will be made in late July/early August). Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.

The selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division from the Top 30 and announce the nine finalists in September. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics then will choose the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual award ceremony Oct. 20 in Indianapolis.
