USciences Women's Basketball's Alex Thomas Named CACC Student-Athlete of the Month for March

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 12, 2018) -- University of the Sciences women's basketball standout Alex Thomas on Thursday was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Student-Athlete of the Month for March, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Thomas earns the award for demonstrating success on the court, in the classroom and giving back to her local community.

On the hardwood, Thomas averaged 14.4 points per game during the month to help lead the Devils to their second-straight CACC Championship while advancing all the way to the NCAA Division II East Region Championship Final. She was named the most valuable player of the CACC Tournament and scored in double-figures in all five contests during March. Thomas, a junior, also averaged 5.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Thomas is also a standout in the classroom, as she boasts a 3.2 cumulative grade point average in her major of occupational therapy at USciences.

In the community, Thomas and her teammates have participated in several activities in surrounding areas and the USciences campus. The team handed out candy at Trunk-or-Treat, a USciences event that gave kids in the area safe place to trick-or-treat on campus, and donated gifts and wrapped gifts as part of Adopt-A-Family, which will provide gifts to four families this holiday season. The team also raised money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and is involved with the Athletes Helping Athletes organization. They will also be hosting their annual Hope Showcase, which benefits The Cure Starts Now Foundation.

It marks the second-consecutive month a USciences women's basketball player earned the monthly award, as teammate Sarah Abbonizio received the honor for February.

The CACC Student-Athlete of the Month Award is handed out each month from September through May, covering the length of the academic year at the 14-member schools in the conference. The award recognizes athletic accomplishment by an individual during the respective month, while also combining academic success and community engagement throughout the student-athlete's career.
