Holy Family Cruises to 71-46 Win Over USciences in CACC Women's Basketball Final

CALDWELL, N.J. (March 3, 2012) –
Holy Family University cruised to a 71-46 win over the University of the Sciences in the 2012 CACC Women’s Basketball Championship Game on Saturday night at Caldwell College.

The Tigers (24-7) used a dominating second-half effort that saw it post an 11-0 over the initial 6:32 of the frame and continue the surge for the majority of the half, as they went on to outscore USciences 38-20 over the final 20 minutes.

The victory marked the sixth time that Holy Family has won the CACC Women’s Basketball Title after previously capturing the crown in 2008, 2007, 2005, 2002 and 2001. 

With the win, Holy Family earns the CACC’s automatic berth in the 2012 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament, which will begin with the regional round on March 9-12 at a site to be determined.

Holy Family’s Erin Mann was named as the 2012 CACC Tournament MVP.  Joining her on the CACC All-Tournament squad is Kristen Blye (Philadelphia), Jeanette Anderson (Caldwell), Lindsey Lopez (Dominican), Carolyn Edwards (USciences), Becca Ruggear (USciences), Kelly Brady (Holy Family) and Ana Cruz (Holy Family).

The Tigers opened up a 33-26 lead at the half on the strength of hot shooting as they made 15-of-28 attempts for a .536 clip.  Mann led the way with 14 first-half points on 7-of-10 shooting.  Cruz was perfect in the opening 20 minutes as she finished 4-of-4 which included 3-for-3 from three-point range.

Cruz paced Holy Family in the win with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting (5-of-6 from 3-point range).  Joining her in double-figures was Mann (18) and Brady (15).

USciences (19-11) was led in the loss by Elizabeth Birman, who finished with 13 points.
