Bloomfield eliminates Wilmington, 67-64

BLOOMFIELD (March 2) -- The Bloomfield College women's basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 67-64, in the quarter-final round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament Wednesday in Bloomfield.

Bloomfield jumped out to a 17-6 lead to start the game off. However, Wilmington went on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 19 with less than 10 minutes left in the half. The Deacons then went on to outscore Wilmington 16-5 to make it 35-24 at the half.

It didn't take long for Wilmington to fight their way back, only to have Bloomfield pull ahead again, this time leading 50-41 midway through the second half. But Wilmington wouldn't come close to giving up, coming within 3 points, making it 54-51 with 6 minutes remaining.

Wilmington got to within 3 again with 1 minute left, trailing 62-59. Three free throws by Bloomfield freshman Ciera Darby (Trenton, NJ) stretched Bloomfield's lead to six with 22 seconds left.

A lay-up by junior Andrea Jones (Elkins Park, PA) cut the lead again with 16 seconds remaining. With another free throw by Darby, the Deacons led by 5 with 14 seconds left. Jones, however, hit a three-pointer with :02 left to cut Bloomfield's lead to 66-64. A free throw by Bloomfield senior Keir Dargon (Newark, NJ) and a rebound by Darby off another free-throw attempt sealed the victory.

Second-seeded Bloomfield (21-7) was led by junior Domenica Raymond (Columbia, LA), who had 20 points. Freshman Marissa Franklin (Pleasantville,

NJ) had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Seventh-seeded Wilmington (14-14) was led by Jones, who finished with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Sophomore Katelin Klingert (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) had 12 points, and freshman Nordia Henry (Philadelphia, PA) finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Michelle Whalen (New Castle,
