WilmU's Lorne Bickley Named 2019 D2CCA East Region Men's Soccer Player of the Year; All-Region Teams Announced
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (November 21, 2019) -- Junior forward Lorne Bickley of the Wilmington University men’s soccer team was named the 2019 Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) East Region Player of the Year on Wednesday (Nov. 20). Bickley’s reception of the accolade comes as the sports information directors of the East Region also voted on All-East Region teams along with Player of the Year voting.
Bickley, who hails from the British crown dependency of Jersey, was the 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Year and put an all-out offensive on the Wilmington and CACC record books. He broke school and conference records with 26 goals and 55 points, leading the entirety of the NCAA Division II institutions in goals, goals-per-game, points and points per game. Bickley led the Wildcats to a 17-1-2 record and the No. 5 seed in Super Region One of the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
Wilmington led all teams with six total selections and the CACC posted the most selections by conference with 11. Bridgeport (4) and Adelphi (3) led the East Coast Conference and Northeast-10 Conference, respectively, in players named to teams of distinction. There was a tie in voting for First-Team defenders, so those two players will both receive First-Team honors and the ninth-place finisher (due to the voting tallies being so close) will receive Second-Team accolades.
The First Team members now advance to the national ballot as potential All-America honorees. Bickley will also move on to the National Player of the Year voting, in which he will be judged against the seven other Regional Players of the Year across the D2CCA landscape. There was a tie on the Second-Team for forwards, so both players receive SecondTeam accolades.
