GCU Knocks Off G-B via PKs to Highlight CACC MSOC Quarters as the Top 3 Seeds in Tournament Advance to Semis

2019 CACC MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (November 11, 2019) -- While chalk held firm with the top-three seeds winning on Monday, the day's highlight belonged to fifth-seeded Georgian Court University, as the Lions outlasted fourth-seeded Goldey-Beacom College via penalty kicks, 6-5, to pull off the upset in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

GCU and G-B played to a 4-4 draw before the Lions won in PKs, while top-seeded Wilmington University won a 7-4 shootout over No. 8 Concordia; second-seeded Post University claimed a 3-0 shutout over Dominican College (No. 7); and No. 3 Holy Family University picked up a 3-1 triumph over No. 6 Jefferson. Monday's four winners will advance to the semifinals, which will be held on Friday at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, Conn. The updated bracket and schedule is located below.

NO. 1 WILMINGTON 7, NO. 8 CONCORDIA 4  /  Boxscore
Lorne Bickley and Abdul Mansaray each scored a pair of markers, and WilmU exploded for five second-half goals to turn a narrow 2-1 halftime lead into a comfortable three-goal final margin. Shawn Genus added a goal and two assists to aid in the offensive attack. Dennis Limani scored twice for Concordia in the setback.

NO. 5 GEORGIAN COURT 4, NO. 5 GOLDEY-BEACOM 4 (GCU via PKs 6-5)  /  Boxscore
The Lions had to make a pair of second-half comebacks to pull off the road tie with the Lightning before subduing them in PKs. Niklas Laenger and Javel Dawkins scored eight minutes apiece midway through the second stanza to knot the score at 3-3, but G-B answered just five minutes later with a strike from Sergi Varona in the 81st minute to make it 4-3 Lightning. However, Dawkins deflected in a shot just 54 seconds later to answer and knot the score at 4-all. After failing on four of its first five PKs, GCU ran off a string of five-consecutive successful attempts to advance to Friday's semis.

Sergio Diaz scored a pair of second-half markers and Jordan Brown turned aside both shots faced, as Post turned a 0-0 halftime score into a three-goal victory over the Chargers. Alvaro Sanchez scored the other goal for the Eagles, who enter the postseason as the defending CACC Champion.

NO. 3 HOLY FAMILY 3, NO. 6 JEFFERSON 1  /  Boxscore
Sean McCormick scored early in the second half to give the Tigers a comfortable two-goal cushion in their quarterfinal win over crosstown rival Jefferson. Davis Habilaj and Sean Touey each scored a first-half goal for HFU. Mark Tobin made a pair of saves in goal to help backstop Holy Family to the win and a trip to Friday's semis where it will meet the defending conference champion.
