Concordia's Ovan Oakley Earns Second Career Men's Soccer Player-of-the-Year Award

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 31, 2016) -- Concordia College men's soccer standout Ovan Oakley on Monday was named the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Soccer Player of the Year, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Oakley's honor highlighted a list of several honorees who earned other major awards or were named to the 2016 men's soccer all-conference teams.

In addition to Oakley, Wilmington University's Lorne Bickley (2016 Rookie of the Year), Philadelphia University's Seiji Rose (2016 Defensive Player of the Year) and Concordia's Sean Kenny (2016 BSN Sports Coach of the Year) were the other major award winners announced on Monday.

For Oakley, it marked the second CACC player-of-the-year honor for his amazing career, as he also took home the accolade during the 2014 season. Oakley, who was also named to the All-CACC First Team on Monday, led the CACC with 14 goals during the regular season, while also topping the conference with 36 points. The graduate forward's eight helpers rank as the second-highest total in the league.

Oakley scored at least one goal in 10 matches during the regular season, including pumping in a hat-trick with three markers in a 4-1 win over Bloomfield College on Oct. 25. He also chipped in two goals apiece in matches versus Caldwell University (Oct. 5) and Goldey-Beacom College (Sept. 17).

Bickley was named the CACC's top rookie after tying for second in the league with 11 tallies during the regular season and ranking second with 27 points. He pumped in at least one goal in eight matches, including three with two scores. The freshman forward also garnered a spot on the all-conference first team.

Rose was a strong defensive presence for the Rams this year and was named the league's best defensive player. He helped PhilaU post a 1.52 team goals against average, while also recording two shutouts. When he wasn't drawing the opposition's top attackers, Rose joined in on the offensive end by striking home five goals and assisting on two others for 12 points. His goals and points ranked 11th and 18th in the league, respectively. Rose nabbed a spot on the All-CACC First Team as well.

Kenny was named the league's coach of the year after guiding Concordia to an 11-5 overall record and a 9-3 mark in CACC play, as the 27 conference points paced the league. It marked the second time in the last three seasons Kenny was named the BSN Sports Coach of the Year, as he also won the honor in 2014.

Felician University was the other program to earn a major award on the day, as the Golden Falcons were named the 2016 Team Sportsmanship Award winners for demonstrating outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the season.

In addition to Oakley, Bickley and Rose, eight other standouts were named to the All-CACC First Team and included forward Michael Clarke (Georgian Court University), forward Finn Reese (Nyack College), midfielder Chahin Aghrim (Goldey-Beacom), midfielder Javier Alvarez Vispo (Concordia), midfielder Juan Bernal (Wilmington University), defender Matteo Fabbri (Concordia), defender Geoff Velasquez (Wilmington) and goalkeeper Suhail Bismilla (Goldey-Beacom).

Eleven (11) other standouts were named to the all-league second team and included forward Darren Appanah (Caldwell), forward Joaquin Escudero (Caldwell), forward Sergio Monton (Dominican College), midfielder Abdallah Bah (Post University), midfielder Francois Legoedec (Nyack), midfielder Martin Williams (Felician), defender Mikail Ellis (Post), defender Joe Esposito (Georgian Court), defender Matteo Moro (Post), goalkeeper Jaime Gonzalez (Concordia) and goalkeeper Jon Hanlon (Post).

The voting for the awards was conducted by the league's 13 head coaches in the sport. The honorees will be recognized at the CACC Soccer Championship Banquet on Thursday night in Lakewood, N.J., at the site of the semifinals and final of the conference tournament.

The 2016 CACC Men's Soccer Championship kicks off Tuesday with quarterfinal action at the sites of the highest seeds. Tuesday's four winners will advance to Friday's semifinals at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday's two winners will then square off in CACC Championship Final on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The semifinals and final will be contested on the GCU Turf Field on the Georgian Court University campus.
