MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM

WATERBURY, Conn. (November 8, 2014) -- The Philadelphia University men's soccer team made it a sweep of the 2014 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's soccer titles on Saturday as the top-seeded Rams claimed a 1-0 triumph over sixth-seeded Wilmington University in the conference title match at Lamoy Field in Waterbury, Conn.

The Rams, who won a share of the CACC regular season title, improved to 16-4-1 overall, while the Wildcats, who had upset both the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in this year's tournament, fell to 13-8 in its bid for a surprise CACC title coming from the No. 6 spot in the tournament.

Philadelphia U. got the only goal it would need 19 minutes in when Victor Chagonda struck home a blast. The goal also enabled Chagonda to stake his claim to being named the most valuable player of the 2014 CACC championship, as he scored twice in the three-match stretch of the conference tournament.

In a defensive battle that saw both teams clog up many quality scoring opportunities, the Rams did manage to put all five of their shots on goal. The Wildcats fired off eight attempts with five going on net as well.

Rams goalkeeper Thomas Attamante turned aside all five shots he faced to earn the shutout win, which also propelled him to the CACC All-Tournament Team.

Attamante's counterpart, WilmU keeper Frank Hall, made four saves despite suffering the loss. Hall's finest play of the afternoon came on a sequence where he wasn't even credited a save, but kept the ball from going in the net to keep his team within a goal.

Late in the contest with the Wildcats pushing, PhilaU was able to slip a ball behind the WilmU defense. Chagonda was able to get by the last line of defense, but Hall charged out and the two battled for position for close to 20 yards before the ball finally squirted out of bounds.

The outstanding effort kept the Wildcats in it, but Philadelphia put the clamps on defensively over the final few minutes to prevent any sort of a comeback.

The win capped a soccer championship sweep for Philadelphia on the afternoon, as the school's women's squad set the tone earlier in the day with a 3-0 triumph over Post University in the women's championship match.
