USciences' Kerr Defends CACC Player of the Year Honors; Men’s Basketball All-Conference Teams Announced

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – University of the Sciences junior forward Garret Kerr has been named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.  Joining Kerr among the major award winners are Rookie of the Year Donte McGill of Goldey-Beacom College and Bloomfield College mentor Gerald Holmes who was named Coach of the Year by the league's sports information directors.  First-year program, Georgian Court University garners Team Sportsmanship Award honors.  The announcement was made today CACC Commissioner Daniel Mara.

Kerr has once again dominated the regular season by sitting atop the NCAA Division II national rankings for rebounds per game at 12.9, total rebounds (322), double-doubles (21) and total field goals made (221).  He is the only student-athlete in Division II to be ranked in the top-10 nationally in both scoring and rebounding.  In addition to leading the nation in four categories, the native of Moorestown, N.J. finished the regular season third in Division II with 24.6 points per game and second in defensive rebounds per game (9.2).  In all, Kerr ranks in the top-20 nationally in 12 major categories.  The 2012-13 national leader in rebounds has been named CACC Player of the Week eight times, defensive player of the week once and honor roll twice.  The 2011-12 CACC Rookie of the Year posted seven games of 30+ points and 18 total games of 20+ points.  In addition, he has registered nine games with 15 or more rebounds.

McGill led the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom in scoring at 15.1 points per game, which was good for 11th in the league during the regular season in 25.0 minutes per contest.  The Newark, Delaware native also led the squad in free throw percentage (88.3), which ranked him second in the conference.  In conference play, McGill increased his scoring output by averaging 17.5 points per game (6th).  He was named CACC Rookie of the Week five times and recorded seven 20+ point outbursts in 2013-2014.   The highlight of his season was a 29-point performance featuring 10-of-12 from the field, including 6-for-6 from three-point range in the January 28 win against Georgian Court.

Holmes, in his 12th season at the helm of the Deacon program will now add this latest coach of the year honor to his 2008-2009 citation.  He has led Bloomfield to the 2014 CACC North Division Championship on the strength of a 17-2 mark in the league circuit.  The Deacons enter the CACC Tournament riding an eight-game winning streak to end the season and will be searching for a "four-peat" in the 2014 edition of the conference playoffs.  Holmes has led the squad to six tournament championships in his 11 years, including two "three-peats".  Coach Holmes is currently 228-133 at BC which is good for a .632 winning percentage.
