USciences Garret Kerr Named CACC Men's Basketball Player of the Year

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (February 28, 2013) – University of the Sciences' Garret Kerr (Moorestown, N.J.) has been honored as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player of the Year as voted upon by the conference's 13 head coaches.

Philadelphia's Andre Gibbs (Smyrna, Del.) was selected as the CACC's Rookie of the Year while Dominican College's Joe Clinton took home Coach of the Year honors.

Nyack College was honored with the CACC's Men's Basketball Sportsmanship award.

Kerr, a 6-4 sophomore forward for the Devils, led the CACC and the Division II East Region in scoring (21.5 points per game) and rebounds (12.6 per game) during the regular season. His 12.6 rebounds per game average ranked tops in nation amongst NCAA Division II players.  Kerr also led the Devils in field goal percentage (52.0%), free throw percentage (79.6%) and steals (1.4 per game). At the conclusion of the regular season, he also ranked second on the team in assists (2.6 per game).  Nationally, Garret's 18 "Double Doubles" are the most amongst all NCAA Division II players.  In addition to his top ranking in rebounding, he also ranks 14th in scoring and 80th in field goal percentage. 

A six-time CACC Player of the Week honoree, Kerr tied Tayron Thomas' (Philadelphia) total during the 2005-06 season. Kerr also joins Thomas as the only student-athletes to earn CACC Player of the Week honors three consecutive weeks in the conference's NCAA era and also becomes the first CACC student-athlete ever to be named the CACC Rookie of the Year and CACC Player of the Year in their career.

Andre Gibbs, a 5-8 freshman guard, started 25 of 26 games for the Rams this season, averaging 38.7 minutes per game, the second-highest minute total in the CACC. At the completion of the regular season, Gibbs' 14 points per game average ranked the rookie 23rd in the CACC in scoring while his 88.5% shooting percentage from the line ranked the accounting major second. The three-time CACC Rookie of the Week honoree was also ranked 11th overall in assists (80) and 17th overall in turnovers (71).

Dominican College head coach, Joe Clinton was selected as the CACC Coach of the Year by his peers after guiding the Chargers to a North Division title and a 21-5 overall mark (15-3 CACC). Clinton guided his team to numerous appearances in the NABC Top 25 Coaches Poll this season, finishing the regular season ranked 23rd.

Joining Kerr on the All-CACC First Team are Leon Porter (Dominican), Antoine Obery (Felician), Mark Dirugeris (Chestnut Hill) and Ervin Ezell (Holy Family).

Porter, a 2010-11 CACC Second Team selection and a 2011-12 CACC First Team selection made his third All-CACC appearance this season.  The senior guard averaged 15.1 points per game last season, tying for 14th place in the CACC. The Laurel, Md. native also ranked fifth in the conference in assist and free throw percentage, fourth in free throw attempts and ninth in three-point attempts.

Obery finished the 2012-13 regular season ranked second in the CACC in points per game (18.8). The Roselle, N.J. native was a CACC Second Team selection in the 2009-10 season before sitting out his 2010-11 season due to injury. At the completion of the season, Obery ranked first in the conference in offensive rebounds, second in the conference in field goal attempts and total points, third in the conference in points per game, rebounds per game and total rebounds.

Dirugeris, a 6-1 senior guard from Woodbury, N.J., finished third overall in the conference in points per game (18.7). A CACC Second Team selection last season, Dirugeris finished the regular season ranked third in the CACC in points, fourth in three-point attempts, fifth in field goal and free throw attempts and seventh in free throw percentage.

Ezell wrapped up the 2012-13 regular season ranked seventh overall in the conference in points per game (16.5). Against conference opponents the 6-4 junior from Deptford, N.J. ranked second in steals, third in assists, fifth in blocks and ninth in points per game (16.0).

The All-CACC Second Team consists of Cory Quimby (Dominican), Argelix Gil (Concordia), Jim Connolly (Philadelphia), Alberto Munoz (Holy Family) and Norman Pope (Concordia).
