2012 CACC MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME BOXSCORE

CALDWELL, N.J. (March 3, 2012) – Bloomfield College got 20 points from freshman Marvin Williams as it defeated Goldey-Beacom 62-50 in the 2012 CACC Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship Game on Saturday afternoon at Caldwell College.

The win marked the second straight year that Bloomfield has captured the CACC Men’s Basketball title and the fifth time in the program’s history (2012, 2011, 2006, 2005, 2004). 

With the win, Bloomfield earns the CACC automatic berth in the 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament which will begin with the regional round on March 10-13 at a site to be determined.  The Deacons advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament last season.

Bloomfield’s Ahmad Harris was named as the 2012 CACC Tournament MVP.  Joining him on the CACC All-Tournament squad is Jim Connolly (Philadelphia), Cory Quimby (Dominican), Khiry Hankins (Holy Family), Rich Flemming (Goldey-Beacom), Marcus Porter (Goldey-Beacom), Matt Wafula (Bloomfield) and Williams (Bloomfield).

The first half was tightly contested as each team played tough on the defensive end as both teams struggled from the field in the opening minutes with Bloomfield shooting a .333 (11-of-33) clip while limiting Goldey-Beacom to .276 (8-of-29). 

The Deacons opened the game by taking a 7-2 lead and held on to the advantage until the Lightning rallied to claim to pull ahead for the first time at 15-14 at the 9:26 mark on a 3-pointer by Flemming. That started a spurt that saw the lead change four more times before Bloomfield put together a 10-5 run over the final five minutes to claim a 26-21 edge entering halftime.

Bloomfield (24-7) stretched out its lead to 37-23 at the start of the second half by ripping off a 11-2 run over the opening 3:22 that was keyed by six points from Harris.

Goldey-Beacom (18-11) trimmed the lead to 43-40 when Porter hit a 3-pointer at the 10:12 mark but they would get no closer as Bloomfield would go on to out-score the Lightning  19-10 the rest of the way which included a 7-of-8 clip from the free throw line over the final 1:32.

Williams shot 6-of-14 from the field while going 7-of-8 from the foul line en route to his team-best 20 points.  Terry Hicks was the only other Bloomfield player in double-figures with 10 while adding three steals.  Kevin Udo pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Porter paced Goldey-Beacom in the loss with 22 points while adding seven rebounds.  Flemming also registered 13 points and eight rebounds.
