WATERTOWN, Conn. (October 3, 2023) -- Post University's Bill Koch drained a 10-foot putt for birdie on the third sudden death playoff hole to claim individual medalist honors Monday at the 2023 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Golf Championship, but it was Goldey-Beacom College who came from behind to win the team championship at Watertown Golf Club in Watertown, Conn.

Koch went toe-to-toe with G-B's Hunter McGee in the thrilling playoff as both competitors exchanged impressive shots in the extra action. On the third hole, McGee put his approach shot just off to the left of the green, while Koch nestled his 10-feet past the pin. McGee slid a chip shot onto the green just next to the pin, thus forcing Koch to drain the lengthier putt to ensure victory. He drained it dead center to win the individual crown.

Both Koch and McGee finished tied for first after 54 holes with a three-round score of three-under-par, 210. McGee shot even or under par in all three of his rounds, including an even-par, 71, on Tuesday to help spark the Lightning to their second-consecutive CACC Championship. Teammates Camilo Samur and Adrian Bonilla each fired one-under-par, 70s, to spearhead the come-from-behind effort. The Lightning shot a 289 (+5) in the final round, as they posted scores in the 280s in each of the three rounds of the championship.

HOW THE LIGHTNING DID IT
McGee, Samur and Bonilla combined to card 14 birdies on Tuesday. Bonilla put up a four-under-par, 32, on the front nine with no bogies and four birds. Bonilla and McGee each birdied 17 to help them hold onto the one-shot win.

Samur joined McGee on the CACC All-Tournament Team by placing among the top five in the individual standings with a three-round total of 213 (E). Bonilla and Pablo Saenz Avila were the other two G-B golfers to place in the top 10, as Bonilla was eighth at 218 (+5) and the latter was ninth at 220 (+9).

KOCH'S INDIVIDUAL TITLE
Koch's win in extra holes helped soften the blow somewhat for Post, as his individual play was spectacular down the stretch. He shot a one-under, 70, including going two under over the final seven holes to produce the playoff and eventual win. He produced two rounds under par for the tournament, and the medalist honor comes on the heels of him being named the CACC Player of the Year in 2022-23. His win over McGee on Tuesday also came against a fellow CACC POY in the Lightning star, who won it a couple seasons ago.

Koch had an impressive up-and-down par save on the first playoff hole after slamming his approach over the green.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
The top five -- and ties -- in the individual standings earned all-tournament accolades and included:

T1. Bill Koch (Post) 210 (-3)*
T1. Hunter McGee (Goldey-Beacom) 210 (-3)
T3. Camilo Samur (Goldey-Beacom) 213 (E)
T3. Ethan Phillips (Post) 213 (E)
5. Alejandro Gomez (Dominican) 214 (+1)

The final grouping that went off on Tuesday featured Koch, McGee and Dominican's Alejandro Gomez, as the group combined to produce two player-of-the-year awards and numerous All-CACC honors. The star-studded lineup came through with spectacular play in the final round.

WHAT DOES G-B WIN
In addition to claiming the program's second-straight conference crown, Goldey-Beacom also locked up the league's automatic bid to next spring's NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Championship in early May. GBC was one of five CACC schools to represent the conference at last spring's NCAA regional, joining Post, Dominican, Wilmington University who qualified as teams, while Felician University's Pablo Hidalgo advanced as an individual competitor.
