PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 22, 2015) -- Freddy Braun sunk an 18-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole Wednesday to capture medalist honors at the 2015 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Golf Championship, staged at The ACE Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa.
Braun's individual title keyed Wilmington University's two-round total of 591 (+15) to claim the 2015 CACC Championship, marking the fifth-consecutive year the Wildcats were crowned league champions. Concordia College finished as the team runner-up in the championship with a +37 (613).
Braun, who shot a two-under-par, 70, in Tuesday's first round, responded with a solid 74 (+2) in the final round to finish the 36-hole tournament with an even-par, 144. Braun's chances of winning the individual title in regulation looked great, however, teammate Joey Russo strung together an impressive round of 71 (-1) to finish in a tie for first. Russo's red number came a day after he logged a 73 (+1) in the opening round.
While Braun finished his 18 holes under sunny, yet windy skies, Russo had to wait out a pair of brief weather delays over his remaining few holes. When the final delay had passed, Russo made a tough five-foot comeback putt to punch his ticket to the playoff.
Braun and Russo each stroked a nice drive on the first playoff hole, and each had a birdie opportunity after their chip shots fell within 18 feet of the pin. Braun went first and sunk his putt to put the pressure on Russo, who's 15-footer just burned the edge of the cup to allow the medalist honor to belong to Braun.
The two teammates congratulated each other on the green, as both played spectacularly the entire tournament. The duo's teammates were on hand to watch the playoff and joined the players on the green to celebrate the team's conference championship.
Both Braun and Russo were named to the CACC All-Championship Team for their performances, as they finished among the top-five of the individual standings. Joining them on the all-championship team were Nyack College's Matthew Yun (T3rd, 149, +5), Wilmington's Alexander Lautenschlaeger (T3rd, 149, +5), Goldey-Beacom College's Patrick McRae (T5th, 151, +7), and Concordia's Lisandro Fadda (T5th, 151, +7).
