G-B's Marshall Awtry Named CACC Baseball Player of the Year

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 10, 2022) -- Goldey-Beacom College standout Marshall Awtry on Tuesday was named the 2022 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Player of the Year as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. The Lightning star also earned First-Team All-CACC status at the catcher spot, as the voting for all conference and major awards was conducted by the league's 11 head coaches in the sport.

In addition to Awtry, Wilmington University's Ryan Sandberg was named the CACC Pitcher of the Year, while Chestnut Hill College's Connor Evans was tabbed as the rookie of the year. WilmU's Brian August was crowned the CACC Coach of the Year. Nyack College earned the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award for demonstrating outstanding character and class during the 2022 campaign.

Awtry batted .350 this season with 14 home runs and 48 runs batted in, while helping to guide the Lightning to a second-place finish in the CACC South Division standings. He topped the conference in home runs and ranks fourth in RBI. Awtry's 120 total bases is the second-highest mark in the CACC. Behind the dish, Awtry threw out 19 base stealers for the second-best mark in the league.

Sandberg has gone 8-2 over 11 appearances on the mound in 2022. He has posted a 2.58 earned run average with 97 strikeouts to only 15 walks issued. Sandberg has yielded just 19 earned runs over 66.1 innings pitched. He leads the league in wins, strikeouts, and ranks second in ERA.

Evans leads the league with a .440 batting average. He homered once this season and knocked in 31 runs. Evans' 66 hits is the third-best total in the CACC. He was also a terror on the basepaths by going 21-for-25 in stolen base attempts.

August has led Wilmington to a 28-10 overall record this season and a 19-5 mark in league play which enabled the Wildcats to claim the CACC South Division Regular Season Championship. WilmU is also ranked in the latest NCAA Division II East Region rankings.
