DOMINICAN WINS 2010 CACC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

WILMINGTON, Del. (May 8, 2010) - The Dominican College baseball team won the 2010 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship after besting No. 5 Post University, 6-4, this afternoon at Frawley Stadium.

The Chargers came into the championship needing to win one game to take home the crown, while the Eagles would have needed to defeat the second-seeded Chargers twice to claim the title.

Post was able to force a second game after defeating Dominican, 1-0, in game one.  The Eagles broke a 0-0 tie with a run in the top of the ninth on a one-out single to right field by centerfielder Jose Reyes.

Tom Sirois went the distance for the Eagles to earn his second win of the tournament. He scattered six hits and fanned three while walking one batter. Shaun Murphy took the loss, allowing one unearned run on nine hits and recording seven strikeouts.

In game two, the Chargers rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a four-run fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead.  In the fifth, senior Tommy Maloney hit an RBI single to center field to score Xavier Bonilla, who led off the inning with a double.  Junior Marco Moreno followed with a double to left center field to plate both Sean Burke and Maloney to put DC up 3-2.  An infield single by Dan Robinson brought home Burke and put DC ahead, 4-2.

An Eagle run in the top of the seventh cut the lead to 4-3, but the Chargers added to the lead in the bottom stanza with two more runs to make the score, 6-3.  A sacrifice fly to right field by Robinson platted a run and a single up the middle by catcher Robert Iglesias brought home another run.  The Eagles scored the last run of the game in the eighth for the final 6-4 Charger victory.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Justin Moore got the win in six innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits.  Moore is usually Dominican's closer and was a second team All-CACC pick as a relief pitcher this season. Dave Bartuska came in for the seventh and allowed two runs on two hits, while Dustin Javins picked up his first save of the season in the final two innings, not allowing a hit and recording four strikeouts.

Dominican now stands at 28-16 overall and has earned the conference's automatic bid the NCAA East Regional Tournament. The field for the tournament will be announced Sunday evening.
