MESSERIAN NAMED CACC PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE WEEK

NEW HAVEN, CT - Phil Messerian of Nyack College has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player and Pitcher of the Week after outstanding performances for the week ending Sunday, March 22. Jonattan Fernandez of Bloomfield College was tabbed Rookie of the Week.

Messerian, a junior from Fairlawn, NJ, had a great week at the plate and on the mound. His best performance was against Bridgeport, as he almost single-handedly defeated the Purple Knights. He threw a complete game shutout in that contest and also provided the only run of the game with a solo home run in the 1-0 triumph. He struck out 10 batters and allowed only one walk and four hits. For the week, he hit .600 with two home runs, eight runs batted in, seven runs scored and two triples. He slugged .789 and had a .647 on-base percentage.

Fernandez, a freshman from Paterson, NJ, hit .500 for the week with a .538 on-base percentage and a .583 slugging percentage. He went 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases at C.W. Post and added a 2-for-3 performance with one run and one RBI at American International.

Honorable Mention

Tyler Mentzer, Philadelphia (Jr., SS, Gettysburg, PA) - Drove in 10 runs for the week along with a .371 batting average.

Kevin Ernst, Felician (So., RHP, Manalapan, NJ) - Allowed four hits and no earned runs in 7.0 IP against Concordia.

Brian Rousseau, Philadelphia (Jr. LHP, Wantagh, NY) - Got a win against CHC by allowing zero earned runs in 7.0 IP, giving up just six hits.

Dan Etherton, Chestnut Hill (So., OF, Princeton, NJ) - Hit .462 in four games with three runs and three RBI.

 CACC Notes

Bloomfield - This week the Fernandez twins hit a combined .366 (Emilio 5-18, 2 triples/ Jonattan 6/12, 1 double) with five RBI's and three stolen bases. Sean Stimpfel posted another strong start against AIC, going 6 innings allowing 1 earned, walking 0 batters, and striking out two Yellowjackets. Steve Godowski picked up his first win of the season as the Deacons used a 6-hit, 6-run sixth inning to push the Deacons to a 10-7 victory over AIC in the 2nd game of the doubleheader. The Deacons begin their CACC schedule this Wednesday in a doubleheader at Felician.

Caldwell - The Cougars wrapped up their Florida trip with three games against regional opponents. Caldwell dropped a pair of one-run games to UMass-Lowell before defeating New Haven 10-7. Junior right-hander Thomas Forkin pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in the victory over New Haven, retiring 15 of the final 16 batters he faced. The Cougars also topped Concordia, 5-4, on Sunday in Bronxville, N.Y., with junior pitcher Buddy Riggs fanning 12. The CACC schedule gets underway this week, with a doubleheader with Post on Wednesday and three games with Wilmington Friday and Saturday. The Cougars also play at Adelphi on Thursday.



Felician - Five pitchers combined to toss the first no-hitter in Felician history in a 22-0 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) in Game 2 of a double-header on Saturday. Felician joined Dowling as East Region teams to throw a no-hitter and have one pitched against them this season. In the same game, freshman OF Evan Mancini set a school record with seven RBI. Mancini had his first two career hits - a three-run triple in the second inning and a grand slam in the sixth. Starting pitcher Jeff Calabrese had a four-strikeout inning in the first. IF/P Anthony Spina, the third pitcher used, set the school career record for pitching appearances with his 58th, passing former teammate Scott VanEs. In Game 1 of the twinbill, sophomore RHP John Rose had his first career base hit. Junior LHP Danny Conti has not allowed an earned run in his last 18 innings.

Philadelphia - The Rams went 2-7 in a long week that saw them outhit 105-80. Junior shortstop Tyler Mentzer continued to be solid in the field and at the plate for the Rams, and pitchers Brian Rousseau and Kevin McGovern completed the two Ram wins on the week.
