WILMINGTON ADVANCES TO CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND OF CACC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

WILMINGTON, DE (May 8, 2009) - No. 3 seed and tournament host Wilmington University earned two wins on Friday to advance to the championship round of the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate (CACC) Baseball Tournament. The Wildcats are the only remaining undefeated team and will have to be defeated twice by either top seeded Dominican College or No. 4 Nyack College. The Chargers and Warriors will play an elimination game on Saturday at 11:00 am for the right to face Wilmington for the CACC Championship. No. 2 Bloomfield College was eliminated today with two losses.

Wilmington's offense led the way in its 14-7 win over Bloomfield. The Wildcats broke things open with eight runs in the sixth inning. At one juncture in the inning, seven straight Wildcats reached base, and all of them scored. Junior catcher Phil Aviola provided the big blow by blasting a 3-run home run over the left field fence. Aviola and sophomore 3B Drew Anusky both drove in four runs. Every Wilmington starter collected at least one hit and scored at least one run. Freshman right-hander Mike Godwin pitched well for the Wildcats, allowing zero earned runs (three unearned) and six hits while fanning four in six innings of action. He also scored once and knocked in a run at the plate.

Wilmington earned its way to the championship round by defeated Nyack, 6-3, behind the pitching of sophomore left-hander Joe Harris. Harris went 8.2 innings and scattered 10 hits with 11 strikeouts while not walking a batter. Wilmington senior OF Cody Holliday went 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI, while Godwin drove in two runs and finished 2-for-3 on the night. The Wildcats took control with four runs in the seventh inning behind a two-run single by Holliday, a sacrifice fly by Godwin and a fourth run via a Nyack wild pitch.

Nyack started the day by defeating Dominican, 5-3. The game started Thursday at noon, but was suspended due to rain and completed Friday morning. Junior right-hander Phil Messerian was the hero for Nyack, as he pitched four innings on Thursday and then came back to finish the game Friday to earn a complete game victory. He allowed nine hits and struck out six. In his five innings of work on Friday, he did not allow a run and surrendered only three hits.  He also went 1-for-3 at the plate with one run batted in.

Dominican remained alive by defeating Bloomfield, 8-5, in an elimination game Friday evening. Bloomfield grabbed a 5-2 edge entering the bottom of the seventh inning before the Chargers made their move to steal the victory. The Chargers plated two runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth. DC scored on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice by sophomore Michael Munoz in the seventh. The four eighth-inning runs came via a walk and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and a two-run single by Dan Robinson. Jack Crawford provided 3.0 innings of key relief for Dominican. He allowed only one hit to go with three strikeouts in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Junior Matthew Snyder pitched well for BC in the loss, allowing only four hits and one earned run in six innings of work.
