DOMINICAN AND WILMINGTON REMAIN ALIVE AT NCAA BASEBALL REGIONAL

NEW HAVEN, CT (May 15, 2009) - Dominican College and Wilmington University are both  1-1 at the NCAA East Region Baseball Tournament after the second day of action at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H. Top-seeded Dominican won an elimination game Friday afternoon, 5-4, against No. 2 Franklin Pierce, while No. 6 Wilmington fell to No. 4 Dowling, 3-2. Both clubs will play elimination games on Saturday, with Dominican facing Dowling at 6:30 pm and Wilmington playing either Adelphi or Assumption at 3:00 pm.

The Ravens struck early and scored three runs in the first inning against Dominican (38-13), but the Chargers got one back in the second before plating three runs in the third.  Left fielder Jason Berrios led off the inning with a single to left and then stole second base.  A walk to freshman Alexi Colon put two on.  Designated hitter Yordis Veras laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error by the Raven third basemen allowed Berrios to score.  Colon later scored on a wild pitch, and an RBI single to right field by third basemen Michael Munoz platted Veras and gave DC a 4-3 lead.

After Franklin Pierce (37-18) tied things up in the bottom of the third, the scored remained knotted until the top of the ninth. That's when Mario Lopez hit a key two-out double and catcher Robert Iglesias followed with an infield single, but a Raven throwing error allowed him to move to second and Lopez to score for the 5-4 DC victory.

Wilmington (28-28) got on the board first against Dowling on a sacrifice fly by JT Gregory, but the Golden Lions tallied two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Wilmington rallied in the bottom of the ninth, as the freshmen duo of Mike Godwin and Jordan Oncay started off the frame with singles.  After a pinch runner was called out, Oncay came around to cross home plate on a RBI single by Matt Botting.  With two outs and the tying runner at first base, Joe Trainor came in and picked up the save (4) to seal the game for Dowling.

Wildcat sophomore Joe Harris (5-6) suffered the loss for Wilmington, giving up three runs (two earned) on 12 hits in nine innings of work.
