WILMINGTON WINS 2009 CACC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

WILMINGTON, DE (May 9, 2009) - Wilmington University clinched the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament Championship Saturday at Frawley Stadium with a 5-4 victory over top-seeded Dominican College. The Wildcats, who were the No. 3 seed for the tournament, have earned the CACC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. Dominican, which entered the week as the top-ranked team in the region, will await an at-large bid to the regional. The field will be announced Sunday night.

The winning run for the Wildcats came in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by senior OF Cody Holliday. JT Gregory started the inning with a double, moved to third on a ground-out and was driven home by Holliday. Holliday went 2-for-5 on the day. Junior left-hander Cameron Saienni picked up the win for Wilmington by working six innings and allowing eight hits a nd four runs.

Wilmington (27-27) was also aided by a 3-run fourth inning. The Wildcats scored on a fielding error by Dominican, a Mike Godwin double and a single by Jordan Oncay.

Dominican (37-12) rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning and loaded the bases with one out. However, Gregory moved from his shortstop position to take the mound and got the Wildcats out of the jam by striking out the final two batters of the inning. Gregory also pitched the ninth to record his second save of the tournament. For his efforts, Gregory was named to the All-Tournament team. Also earning All-Tournament honors for the Wildcats were junior catcher Phil Aviola, sophomore starting pitcher Joe Harris, Holliday and freshman pitcher/catcher Mike Godwin, who was named Tournament MVP.  Godwin led the Wildcats with a .500 average (5-for-10) at the tournament with four RBI's, two runs scored and two doubles. He also picked up a win on the mound with a victory over Bloomfield to open WU's tournament run. He went six innings and allowed six hits and zero earned runs (three unearned) along with four strikeouts.
